Job Summary:

Implements and coordinates a communication and media relations program designed to further the College's strategic plan goals and increase visibility among key audiences. Exercises sound judgment and demonstrates ability to recognize and place newsworthy stories. Reports to and works under the direction of the Associate Vice President, Communications and Government Relations.

Position Title Coordinator, Communications and Media Requisition Number 2023.20010 Job Description

Applicants may be asked to demonstrate any or all of the following duties:

1. Works with Associate Vice President to cultivate relationships with media and agency leadership and supports the efforts of journalists covering the College. Responds in a timely manner to media requests, develops media pitches that support the strategic and reputation goals of the College, writes and distributes news releases. Keeps abreast of and is proficient in the use of new media, including current and emerging electronic media outlets and their preferences and opportunities. 2. Greets and escorts media on campus; creates and staffs media staging area as needed. 3. Cultivates faculty and key staff to uncover story ideas that advance the College's mission; works with faculty and staff to facilitate media visits inside and outside of the classroom. 4. Establishes and maintains an expert list for the media and possible speaking engagements. 5. Maintains the news and public information sections of the College website for relevance and freshness. 6. Researches and drafts guest columns and feature stories. 7. Serves as reporter at board meetings and with Associate Vice President final approval publishes reports on deadline. 8. Develops outline, researches, writes, edits and publishes various College publications including INSPIRE Magazine. 9. Serves as social media back-up to Digital Production Manager. 10. Implements and monitors public information campaigns and evaluates effectiveness of publicity efforts. 11. Works with Associate Vice President on response to sensitive issues, and as needed, advises College leadership on media issues and prepares College personnel for media interviews. Assists the Associate Vice President in tracking and researching timely topics and as needed, assists in drafting issues papers. 12. Serves on College and Department's emergency response team, including serving as back-up for Communications team lead on emergency management messages (BB Connect) and on the Critical Incident Management Team (CIMT) as needed. 13. Maintains the Department's customized style guide for College publications. 14. Tracks media coverage and assists the Associate Vice President and Project Manager in preparing reports for President and others as needed. 15. Works outside the typical workday to assist in meeting deadlines or supporting the Department at special events, including graduation. 16. Creates and maintains database and/or spreadsheet files. Inputs and updates department information into current College computer system. 17. Attends and represents the department in client meetings. 18. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

· Education/Experience:

Bachelor's degree in related field (communications, public relations, English) and five years of professional experience in media or public relations; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working with news media in print, TV, radio, and/or the Web, and the ability to select the appropriate media for the message.

Exceptional writing skills in different styles (i.e., reporting, feature writing, expository, and persuasive). Demonstrated proficiency and resourcefulness in the use of all media formats, including new media, or social media, as well as traditional print and broadcast.
