Computer Scientist / Software Engineer / Physicist for High-throughput Data

Background
The High Performance Computing (HPC) and Data Processing group at the Alfred
Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research has a project position
available as part of the ongoing development of HPC support. The position
involves 2nd level support for HPC users during the multi-year implementation
phase of the new HPC system "Albedo".
Tasks
User support of typical problems (bash, slurm, etc.)
Installation, deployment, configuration and documentation of scientific
software and libraries
Introducing the users to the new load balancing incl. special nodes,
configuring the scheduler to optimize the usage of different application
areas
Supporting scientists in the use of GPUs for their codes
Communication of the solutions with all relevant working groups in AWI
Requirements
Master`s degree in computer science / physics / mathematics or other
relevant mathematical/scientific subject
Very good knowledge of
Linux operating systems
Shell programming (bash, sed, awk, grep, etc.)
Workload Managers (SLURM)
English spoken and written
Good knowledge in
Fortran, C/C++ and GPU/CUDA compiler, as well as autotools, CMake
Knowledge of at least one standard software (python, R, matlab)
Version control systems (Git) and ticket system (Jira)
Desirable skills and knowledge
Working with the Spack Package Manager
Use cases for GPUs in the HPC area
Performance measurements (benchmarking) of codes and file systems

This is a full-time position, limited to 31st of December 2025. It is also
suitable for part-time employment.The salary will be paid in accordance with
the Collective Agreement for the Public Service of the Federation
(Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes, TVöD Bund), up to salary level
13. The place of employment will be Bremerhaven.
