Communications Strategist
To embody Duke's longstanding vision of improving population health and create a transdisciplinary setting for research and education, the University's Board of Trustees approved the Department of Population Health Sciences in the School of Medicine in May 2017. The department's creation brought together faculty and operational staff in behavioral science, epidemiology, health economics, health services research and policy, and implementation science. The department includes 48 faculty members, 48 scholars with secondary appointments, and a staff of 67.
Population Health Sciences in the Duke University School of Medicine is looking to hire an experienced Communications Strategist to increase the visibility and impact of research and education programs in the Departments of Population Health Sciences and Biochemistry. This is a senior-level communications role that has the potential to make a significant impact on department strategy and growth, interacting regularly with senior leadership in both departments.
The role will focus on three areas of work. First, the position will lead the development of communications and outreach plans and strategies. Second, the position will identify, organize, and activate resources for communications and outreach within the departments, School of Medicine, broader Duke, and outside (partners, contractors). Third, the position will review and, at times, execute communications and outreach activities to ensure critical timelines and goals are met.
Specific work will include the following:
Develop communication plans to identify objectives, strategies, target programs, audiences, tactics and key messages for initiatives and projects.
Consult with stakeholders to identify needs and ensure objectives are met.
Develop plans, processes, and structures to involve faculty, staff, students, and other resources (e.g., contractors, student workers) in outreach and marketing efforts. Oversee work, timelines, and results.
Develop outreach and communications metrics that align with goals and assess performance of communication and outreach strategies over time.
Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with units and provide guidance related to content for websites, social media, publications and other communication channels. Ensure consistency of style, freshness of and usability of content in support of strategic and operational goals.
Establish editorial guidelines and provide oversight for creation of content for various communication channels.
Manage freelancers, interns, and student workers to produce content to support communication, outreach plans, and goals for the department.
Identify partners within the School of Medicine and Health System, within broader Duke University, and outside the university for co-marketing opportunities and to amplify communications.
Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with leaders and key communication offices and staff for Duke University and Duke University Health System.
Partner with Duke University Office of News and Communication and Global Communication Office on collaborative efforts and news locally, nationally and internationally.
Coordinate with the Office of News & Communications on media inquiries and news releases.
Provide consultation in the development, review and distribution of internal communications within the department.
Perform other related duties as needed.
Skills
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with stakeholders and partners. Ability to develop plans, timelines, and meet deadlines. Organizational skills necessary to manage and coordinate faculty, staff, and students and a variety of complex communication and outreach activities and tasks. Attention to detail is critical. Self-motivated, goal oriented, and ability to work independently. Experience working in an academic or research- intensive environment is preferred.
Skills in one or more areas of marketing is a plus, such as story writing, social media, graphic design, photography or video, analytics, or content management systems.
Education/Training
Work requires communications, marketing, outreach/development, strategic planning, analytical and organizational skills generally required through completion of Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, communications, business, English, or a related field.
Experience
Requires four years of experience in journalism, public relations, marketing, development, or related field with experience in developing and executing marketing, communications, outreach, or development strategies and plans. Requires experience managing projects and/or programs.

Education
