The Coastal Resilience Lab and the Institute of Marine Sciences (https: // ims.ucsc.edu/) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invite applications for a coastal risk and climate change modeler , who will work under the direction of Dr. Michael Beck and in close collaboration with Dr. Borja Reguero. The Coastal Risk and Climate Change Modeler will play a vital role in modeling and assessing the risks associated with storms and sea- level rise in reef and wetland environments around the world.
The successful applicant will develop and implement large-scale methodologies for evaluating flood risk in coastal areas across different climate change scenarios, and at regional to global scales, to better understand the potential impacts of climate change on coastal communities. The project scientist will also create and run model simulations that explore various coastal hazard mitigation strategies and ecosystem restoration scenarios. This work will contribute to enhancing the resilience of coastal ecosystems and communities in the face of climate-related challenges.
Another crucial aspect of the role involves assisting with the development of climate services that can be readily integrated into the insurance industry. This integration will help foster a better understanding of coastal risks within the industry and facilitate more informed decision-making processes. Lastly, the modeler will perform data synthesis and geospatial analysis, which will include gathering and synthesizing diverse datasets encompassing hydrodynamic, geologic, ecologic, and socioeconomic factors, both from field observations and model-based sources. These datasets will be utilized in an integrated spatial prioritization approach to identify sites where coastal habitats can effectively protect adjacent human communities from flood and erosion risks.
The selected candidate will have the exciting opportunity to perform solutions-focused research on projects supported by organizations such as: the World Bank, USGS, the US Army Corps, FEMA, The Nature Conservancy, and alongside researchers from other academic institutions and the private sector. This collaborative environment will provide unique insights and networking opportunities within the field of coastal risk and climate change modeling. As such, the position requires that the incumbent successfully collaborate and work as a member of a large team, demonstrate intellectual independence and critical thinking, possess advanced programming and modeling skills, demonstrate strong communication skills, and contribute to the preparation of publications.
