Job Summary The Coastal Operations Manager serves an integral part of the leadership team for the Office of University Communications and as the lead communications professional for the University on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. This position manages primary communication functions at the Gulf Park campus, including marketing communications, public relations, news and media relations, and digital media efforts, and also liaises with communication staff at the University's teaching and research sites along the Gulf Coast to coordinate high-level communication, public relations, and event-related projects. This position directly reports to the Director of University Communications and provides support to the Director as needed. The position also indirectly reports to the Senior Associate Vice President for Coastal Operations. This position is based in Long Beach but involves regular day travel to Hattiesburg or other locations.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides direct support to the Senior Associate Vice President for Coastal Operations on communication-related matters specific to the Gulf Park campus and other coastal sites. Interacts with media for media coverage opportunities, issue response, etc., for the Gulf Park campus, coordinating with campus leaders as needed. Advises on promotional opportunities associated with special outreach events. Assists in Gulf Park campus crisis communication planning and responses.
  • Serves as the primary liaison between communication staff at the University's teaching and research sites along the Gulf Coast and the Office of University Communications, consulting and assisting in advising on high-level communication, public relations, and event-related matters affecting the institution. Works with communications contacts at other coastal sites to coordinate crisis communication planning and responses as needed.
  • Provides leadership of brand management for the Gulf Park campus and the University's Coastal Operations. Assists the Director of University Communications in strategic communication planning for the University and its campuses, teaching and research sites.
  • Indirectly manages University Communications employees based at the Gulf Park campus. Participates in professional development activities that enhance work as a leader on the Gulf Park campus and in the Office of University Communications.
  • Allocates and manages funds within the Gulf Park campus communications budget and assists in the management of Office of University Communications budget strings.
  • Maintains active knowledge of developments in field, seeks out learning opportunities and other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in marketing, public relations, advertising or related field from an accredited college or university and two years of professional experience in a marketing, public relations or communication field. Valid Driver's License is required.

  • Working knowledge of the University, Gulf Coast region, and/or higher education
  • Demonstrated skill utilizing a wide range of communication media, including web, social media, news and media relations, advertising, marketing, crisis communication and more
  • Demonstrated organizational skills
  • Demonstrated innovation and creativity in prior marketing and public relations work
  • Ability to multi-task and handle the stress of a fast-paced work environment
  • Ability to effectively advocate for the campus and University in the community
  • Ability to effectively oversee a staff
  • Ability to manage the marketing, public relations and digital media efforts for the Gulf Park campus
  • Ability to provide oversight of brand management for Gulf Park campus
  • Ability to travel between campuses and teaching sites as needed
  • Preferred Qualifications

    Master's degree in marketing, public relations, advertising or related field. Three to five years of professional experience in a marketing, public relations or communication field.
