Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.

Cluster hire of 3 postdoc researchers to work on science-policy interface around Blue-Green Biodiversity

The loss of biodiversity is, next to climate change, one of the biggest challenges humanity is facing. Research and action to reverse and mitigate the loss of biodiversity and associated ecosystem services are crucially needed. In order to tackle this societally urgent topic, the ETH Board has funded a research initiative on Blue-Green Biodiversity (BGB initiative, for more information on the initiative, see www., i.e. the biological diversity at the interface of water and land. Its goal is to strengthen interdisciplinary biodiversity research within WSL, Eawag and beyond, to understand and respond to challenges associated with biodiversity change and loss. The initiative has been funding collaborative WSL – Eawag projects since 2020.

BGB has as one of its key goals actionable activities related to science- policy/practice interaction. The program therefore hires 3 postdoc researchers to work on aspects of science-policy interaction of Blue-Green Biodiversity. The postdocs are hired either at Eawag or WSL, and will split their time between Eawag and WSL. All postdocs have a direct mentoring-scheme with a PI from WSL and Eawag, respectively, yet are strongly engaged and integrated in the BGB initiative. All three postdoc are expected to spend part of their time (at least two days per week) in a highly interdisciplinary postdoc-hup office in the new FLUX Synthesis Centre at Eawag Dübendorf (https: // www. building/flux/). This center will host up to 12 postdocs across different initiatives and may also serve for synthesis workshops, fostering interdisciplinary interactions. The 3 postdocs strongly coordinate amongst themselves and with ongoing BGB projects and other ETH initiatives in order to draw on existing research and networks towards policy and practice.

We invite interested candidates with a strong professional background in the areas specified below and the keen interest for collaborative work between academia stakeholders, politics and society. The Postdocs start in spring 2023. Positions are offered for a 80–100% employment for 2 years. The deadline for applications is the 20.2.2023.
