The Department of Computing is seeking a Clinical Instructor to serve as the Department's Director of Instructional Design. The Department is home to undergraduate programs in Computer Science, Cybersecurity & Modern Networks, Information Systems, and Information Technology, graduate programs in Computer Science and Information Systems, and a graduate certificate in Data Analytics.

The Department also supports coursework in the BBA Marketing Analytics program, MBA concentrations in Business Analytics and Cybersecurity Management, and a Graduate Certificate in Public Health Analytics. The Department is one of only 11 U.S. universities with 3 ABET CAC accredited programs, and the only U.S. university known to house all programs in one academic department.

This position is intended to facilitate and improve the Department's educational programs, particularly in the online environment, and to facilitate the creation and enhancement of new graduate and undergraduate programs and partnerships. This faculty member will work with Department leadership to develop a strategy for enhancing educational program delivery and curriculum expansion so as to improve student learning outcomes and grow program enrollment. The individual will partner with faculty colleagues (who are instructors of record in courses) to enhance course content, delivery, assessment, and other course elements. A particular focus of the position is supporting curriculum innovation, driving the use of advanced tools and technologies, and allowing the Department to implement processes based on educational and industrial best practices.

The successful candidate will be appointed as a clinical track faculty member at the rank of instructor. The clinical track appointment may be converted to the tenure track at any time prior to but not later than the expiration of the first three-year term as specified by University policy. The position is contingent upon sufficient funding. Position starts July 1, 2022.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of best practices, purposes, practices, and procedures for the curriculum development process within a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge of SACSCOC Principles of Accreditation and Tennessee Higher Education Commission policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of instructional design best practices regarding teaching and learning in a variety of modalities, including synchronous and asynchronous online instruction.
  • Knowledge of technology trends and techniques that promote exceptional teaching and learning practices.
  • Knowledge of internal and external resources available to aid in the design, development, and promotion of innovative degree programs.
  • Knowledge of web and social media communication strategies.
  • Excellent communication, planning, problem-solving and organizational skills including relationship building with internal and external constituents.
  • Ability to manage, analyze and interpret data, including the ability to communicate data visually.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact in a professional capacity with diverse faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of people and demonstrate strong leadership skills.
  • Ability to design program curriculum with a clear philosophy and overreaching goals that guide the entire program.
  • Ability to research and assess market data to identify opportunities for institutional academic program initiatives.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Education degree in instructional design, curriculum and instruction, higher education, or a related field required (doctorate must be completed by the appointment start date).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional design principles required.
  • 2 to 3 years of experience with online curriculum assessment required.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience conducting market research is preferred.
  • Experience working in higher education is preferred.
  • High capability with the use of computing technology in course delivery.
