The mission of the Department of Middle, Secondary, and K-12 Education is to prepare excellent professionals who are knowledgeable, effective, reflective, collaborative and responsive practitioners who are leaders in their fields. Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Non-Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate teaching goals.

Teaching – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, and grading student work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be expected to teach students seeking undergraduate, graduate certificate, and/or master's degrees in the middle grades and secondary education programs. The department seeks a faculty colleague to join a high-achieving and dynamic team committed to preparing professionals who are knowledgeable, effective, reflective, responsive to equity and diversity, and collaborative. The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching courses focused on instructional design and planning, adolescent development, the science of learning, equity and inclusion, and current issues in middle and secondary schools. They may also teach courses on methods and/or assessment in mathematics or science. The successful applicant will serve on committees and assist with other department activities. A 4:4 teaching load is expected.

The department seeks a teacher educator with a deep commitment to preparing pre-service and inservice teachers from diverse backgrounds for careers of excellence in teaching and advocacy for adolescents. The successful applicant will possess strong skills in the areas of: planning, instruction, and assessment in face-to-face and online post-secondary contexts; attention to detail; organization; rapport-building with and accessibility to post- secondary students at varied developmental levels; and verbal and written communication.

Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned masters and/or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience

Preferred Qualifications: In addition, the following qualifications are preferred:

  • 6-12 teaching experience in math and/or science;
  • post-secondary teaching experience (face-to-face and/or online);
  • evidence of quality of post-secondary teaching and/or 6-12 teaching;
  • evidence of the ability to contribute to the College's goal of increasing effectiveness in responding to diverse student populations; and/or
  • evidence of scholarship.

    Required Qualifications: To qualify, applicants for the position should have:

  • an earned doctoral degree, by the time of hire, relevant to middle grades and/or secondary education (e.g., in curriculum and instruction, urban/multicultural education, science education, math education, or other areas related to middle grades or secondary education) from an accredited university;
  • a minimum of 3 years of 6-12 teaching experience; and
  • eligibility for North Carolina licensure.

Names, addresses (including titles and institutions), telephone numbers, and email addresses of five references 6. Other supporting materials providing evidence of the quality of the applicant's teaching, service, and/or scholarship, such as:

  • evidence of high-quality post-secondary teaching (e.g., course evaluations, descriptions of received awards for teaching, letters of reference from individuals directly familiar with the applicant's post-secondary teaching practice);
  • evidence of high-quality 6-12 teaching (e.g., evaluations, descriptions of received awards for teaching, letters of reference from individuals directly familiar with the applicant's 6-12 teaching practice); and/or
  • sample publications (if applicable)
  • Review of application materials will begin January 31st and continue until the position is filled.

    Please note that UNC Charlotte is currently operating in-person at full capacity, and under the Department's current plans, the successful candidate will teach face-to-face courses beginning in August 2022.
