What you'll do on a typical day

The Child Development Center Staff II, Lead Teacher position offers a fully supplied, quality classroom and has primary responsibility for effective design and implementation of a developmentally appropriate early care and education environment. The CDC Staff II Lead Teacher reports directly to the Director of the CDC and has the following responsibilities

  • Promotes College mission, values, and vision
  • Designs, implements, and evaluates developmentally appropriate environments that reflect the value of diversity for preschool children from six weeks to five years
  • Integrates the principles of child development into all aspects of program practice
  • Models research-based current best practices in early care and learning
  • Documents development and learning at both the individual and group level
  • Demonstrates flexibility, openness to change, and commitment to working in a collaborative, team-based environment
  • Maintains accurate and appropriate records for each child
  • Maintains sanitary conditions that meet local and state requirements and that meet program quality standards
  • Monitors classroom supply and equipment needs and reports to the Director of the CDC in a timely manner
  • Provides leadership in planning and implementing activities that promote campus and community involvement
  • Posts daily schedule and classroom activities in timely and visible manner
  • Maintains all records required by the program and the College as well as local and state agencies
  • Implements a variety of teaching styles, updates classroom materials, and provides for a stimulating arrangement of classroom space and equipment
  • Consults with the Director of the CDC to ensure recommendation of appropriate resources and/or referrals for families
  • Supervises Early Childhood students and provides timely, appropriate feedback to students completing classroom assignments, observations, and/or cooperative work experiences in CDC classroom
  • Facilitates completion of observations and/or assignments in the CDC by students from a variety of College programs and disciplines
  • Pursues appropriate professional development experiences
  • Models professional integrity
  • Assists in orientation and mentoring of new CDC Staff 1 and Staff 2 teachers
  • Serves on committees to support the College and division purpose
  • Performs other duties as assigned which support the purpose and initiatives of the CDC and College

    Position Qualifications

    Required: Associates Degree in Early Childhood or related field from a regionally accredited institution NC Early Childhood Credential (NCECC) Skill in the use of computers and commitment to using technology Excellent oral and written communication skills Ability to work effectively and collegially with others Ability to provide leadership in anticipating and responding to change Familiarity with and appreciation for the mission of a comprehensive community college Ability to perform the following functions: - Integrate child development principles into all aspects of program practices - Design, implement and evaluate developmentally appropriate environments for children ages six weeks to five years - Demonstrate best practices in early care and education - Integrate age appropriateness and individual appropriateness into each child's daily experience - Demonstrate the value of diversity in the learning environment - Provide information, support, and resources for parents

    Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Child Development or related field from a regionally accredited institution Experience in an Early Childhood setting

    Work environment

    ADA requirements for the position include critical thinking skills with the ability to process information, exercise good judgment, and perform evaluations of children's assessments. Requires the ability to lift/carry children 35-50 lbs. to meet their needs; ability to stoop, bend, push, kneel, squat, pull, reach, stand, walk, and/or sit to meet needs of children; ability to perform fine motor tasks including, but not limited to, the following tasks regularly performed while caring for young children: snapping, buttoning, zipping, pinning, tying, and grasping; visually supervise children and respond appropriately to verbal and non-verbal cues; and exercise mobility to respond to imminently harmful situations.
