Labor and Delivery - (Full-time, Night Shift) -

The Charge Nurse-Perinatal is a professional care giver who assumes responsibility and accountability for a patient or a group of patients for a designated time frame and provides care to these patients via therapeutic use of self, the nursing process, the therapeutic environment, treatment, and modalities and interdisciplinary collaboration within the scope of practice set forth for Registered Nurses. Utilizes discretion and independent judgment in applying the nursing process to the provision of age specific and developmentally appropriate quality patient care in all areas of Obstetrics. Meets qualifications, licensure and certifications and competencies as defined in the department specific plan for providing care. Applies theoretical concepts to clinical practice and continually expands knowledge base and clinical skills with a focus in perinatal specialty. Utilizes interpersonal skills to maximize excellence in customer service, safe patient care and professionalism. Contributes to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce and patient population. Performs other duties as needed.

Graduate from an accredited school of nursing. Associate's Degree in Nursing required. Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred. Minimum two years of recent, appropriate nursing practice in Labor and Delivery, Mother Baby, Nursery or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) within past two years. Minimum one year experience as Unit Charge Nurse, Team Leader or equivalent preferred. Completion of Lactation Educator program preferred. Active California Registered Nurse (RN) license required. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications from the American Heart Association required. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required. International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification preferred. STABLE certification required within one year of hire date. American Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses (AWOHNN) approved Fetal Monitoring required within sixty days of hire.

Good communication and writing skills. Physical and emotional stamina. Able to use a computer and learn hospital system. Demonstrate and understanding of normal growth and development of the neonate and pediatric, adolescent and adult population. Demonstrate an understanding of the developmental and physical abnormalities of a critically ill or anomalous newborn. Able to demonstrate leadership skills by directing others, maintaining nursing unit process flow, and participation in committees or other documented activities. Exhibits professionalism at all times in dealing with all staff, ancillary departments, and facility's internal and external customers. Exhibits effective, proactive conflict resolutions and participates in remediation of staff as appropriate. Able to read; write legibly; speak in English (and Spanish preferred) with professional quality; use computer and software programs necessary to the position (i.e. Microsoft Windows, Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, internet, timekeeping, e-mail); troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment (i.e. Intravenous (IV) pumps, Electrocardiogram (ECG) monitors, vital sign machines, bed and gurney operation, and the like). Able to relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; lead, supervise, teach, and collaborate; accept direction. Able to communicate effectively in person, in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; work well under pressure; problem solve; organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail. Able to distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place and patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch.
