The Department of Art & Design at East Tennessee State University seeks
applications for an outstanding administrator, scholar, and strong advocate
for equity and inclusion for the position of Chair. This position will be 12
month, tenure-track, full professor. The Chair will lead a vibrant department
that encourages students to challenge the boundaries of Art, Design and Art
History. The Chair will coordinate department faculty and staff in achieving
the department's programing, current and future goals.
The Department of Art & Design takes a multidisciplinary approach across many
areas of study. The department is known for its strong research, innovative
teaching, and quality of student work, with 14 tenured or tenure-track
faculty, and five staff members. Additionally, the department supports two
galleries with vibrant calendars and an exciting schedule of guest artists
that connect widely with the community and campus. As a NASAD accredited
program, the department offers a BA with concentrations in Studio Art and Art
History, BFA in Studio Art, BFA in Graphic Design and MFA in Studio Art. For

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
As leader of the department, the Chair:
Assumes a leadership role in department governance including
administrative operations related to personnel and budget management,
curricular scheduling, programming, and development.
Advocates for the department to the university and maintains effective
liaisons with campus and regional partners.
Supports a departmental vision, in collaboration with faculty, that
reflects the educational, research, and service values of the department
in the context of the College's and University's academic visions.
Strives to maintain positive and productive working relationships, both
inside and outside of the department. Acts in stewardship of students on
an individual, departmental and programmatic level, including the
development of effective advising and assessment activities.
Fosters and promotes the funding, productivity and visibility of an active
faculty and staff within a department that includes a diverse array of
degrees, areas of study, and facilities.
Encourages interdisciplinary programing within the department and with
other academic programs.
Supports curricular innovation and excellence in teaching.

A terminal degree in a field recognized within the relevant disciplines.
A significant, demonstrable and active record of research, scholarship,
teaching and service.
Credentials and achievements appropriate to and commensurate for
appointment or hire at the rank of full professor.
Understanding of studio practice and art historical pedagogy, academic and
creative research, and the valuable relationship of art history and the
study of studio art and design.
Evidence of administrative experience with a complex budget.
A demonstrable commitment to excellence in leadership and development in
teaching, research and service that continues the department's mission of
building, supporting and strengthening an inclusive, equitable, and
diverse scholarly environment.
Experience in constructively assessing faculty teaching, research and
