Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Position Summary

The School of Medicine of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a well-qualified leader to serve as Chair for the Department of Surgery.

The Department of Surgery is nationally recognized for its excellence in clinical care, research, and education. The Department is comprised of 345 faculty, staff, and trainees who sustain and drive the tripartite mission, which is “to provide the highest quality patient care to all people through innovation, world-class research, and training the next generation of surgical health care professionals and scientists”. The selected individual will provide leadership and direction for clinical health care across 9 divisions and clinical programs, including Acute Care and Trauma Surgery, Burn Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Gastrointestinal Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Abdominal Transplant Surgery and, Vascular Surgery. The department provides surgical services at UNC Rex, UNC Hillsborough and UNC Chatham Hospitals. Uniquely, the Department provides surgical leadership through UNC's Project Malawi, multi-disciplinary oncology programs, and its nationally recognized Burn Center.

The UNC School of Medicine is ranked #5 nationally in NIH funding among public universities. For the Department of Surgery, total research funding and federal research funding has increased steadily each year over the last 5 years, and many Divisions have active research programs in both clinical and/or the basic sciences. Funding also includes two T32 training awards in Surgical Oncology and Burn.

The Department has 6 fellowship programs and 4 ACGME approved residency programs – Cardiothoracic, General Surgery, Plastic and Vascular – along with a Simulation lab with Xi Robotic training programs. Surgery excels in teaching learners at all levels of training from entry level to post-graduate.

The Department and School of Medicine have well-established collaborations with the #2 ranked Gillings School of Global Public Health and #1 ranked UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, both of which are within two blocks of the School of Medicine. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill provides a highly collaborative and interactive environment, and department faculty have multiple collaborations across the University as well as inter-institutional collaborations.

Minimum qualifications include a M.D./D.O. degree
