    University of Coimbra opens a call for one research fellowship, in the framework of the project “Cerebrovascular hypothesis of stress-induced behavioral alterations”, (reference: Bial 73/20, financed through the BIAL Foundation in the following conditions:

    Scientific area: Health sciences, biomedicine, Pharmaceutical Sciences or other related areas..

    Skills/Qualifications/Admission requirements: Applicants with Master degree in Life or Health Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences or other related areas, with expertise (DGAV certification) in animal (rodents) manipulation and behavioural tests. Background in Neurosciences, with focus in the neurovascular unit, will be considered as positive points.

    Enrolled in a doctoral degree in one of the above areas or enrolled in a course not conferring an academic degree.


    “Courses not conferring an academic degree” must be related to the research fellowship's activity type. “Courses not conferring an academic degree” are the courses referred to in paragraph e) of number 3 of article 4 of Decree- Law no. 74/2006, of 24 March, in the current wording, provided that they are developed in association or cooperation between the higher education institution and one or more R&D units, in accordance with the provisions of paragraph e) of article 3 of the Regulation for Research Fellowships of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P.

    Although the recipients must be enrolled in a cycle of studies leading to the attribution of an academic degree or in a course not conferring an academic degree, at the time of application it is not necessary for the candidate to have made such an enrollment, and proof of enrollment must be presented until the fellowship is contractualized. Candidates are only required to meet the requirements to enroll in the training offer. If there are candidates already enrolled (including attending a course), they compete on an equal footing with those who are not enrolled.

    Work plan/ Objectives: The expected work will address Tasks 1 and 2 of the project entitle “Cerebrovascular hypothesis of stress-induced behavioral alterations”. The main objective is to clarify behavioural alterations induced by unpredictable chronic mild stress in both male and female rats. Moreover, a detailed characterization of brain vascular alterations will be performed using different technical approaches.

    The selected applicants will receive scientific training to develop research work using chronic stress animal models, perform behavioural analysis, immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy.


    Regime: The attribution of the fellowship does not generate or entitle a relation of a legal-labour nature, and the fellowship is undertaken in an exclusive dedication regime. The fellowship holder is awarded the Fellowship Statute of the UC, in its current wording, according to the Research Fellowship Holder Statute , and according to the Regulation for Research Fellowships of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., both in their current wording.

    Location: Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research, Faculty of Medicine, Polo III at the University of Coimbra.

    Duration: 12 (twelve) months.

    Renewal: Unrenewable.

    Financial conditions: The amount of the fellowship is € 1.104,64 corresponding to the monthly compensation stipulated in the FCT table (https: // www. fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.en), plus social security (Seguro Social Voluntário, first level contributions) and personal accidents insurance. The payment will be made by bank transfer. This amount will not be increased during the entire period of the fellowship duration.

    Selection methods: Curricular Evaluation (50%) and Interview (50%)..

    Selection criteria: In the CV evaluation the following items will be considered:

    (i) The absolute merit of the curriculum vitae (CV – 40% – scale from 0 to 100);

    (ii) The suitability of the profile to the activities to be developed (AP – 60% – Scale from 0 to 100).

    The absolute merit of the curriculum vitae will take into account the following evaluation criteria:

    A. Master's final grade (25%)

    1. Less than 13.99 values - 50

    2. From 14 to 15.99 values - 75

    3. Above 16 values – 100

    B. Participation in scientific meetings (25%)

    1. Without participation in congresses but with participation in other activities - 50

    2. Participation only in national congresses - 70

    3. Participation in up to 3 international congresses - 90

    4. Participation in more than 5 international congresses – 100

    C. Scientific publications (authorship and co-authorship) (50%)

    1. 0 articles - 0

    2. Between 1 to 3 articles – 50

    3. Between 4 to 9 articles - 80

    4. More than 10 articles – 100

    The suitability of the profile to the activities to be developed will take into account the proven/documented knowledge in the following areas:

    The Jury have the right to don´t select any candidate if it is verified that none of them has the appropriate profile for the exercise of the functions.

    Applicants with academic degrees obtained abroad will be required to present a Certificate of Recognition in accordance with applicable law. This document is mandatory only in the contractualization phase.

    Additional information: The evaluation results will be announced within 90 working days after the end of the applications submission deadline, by notifying the applicants via email. After the announcement of the results, candidates are considered automatically notified to, if they wish to do so, comment on the results on a preliminary hearing period within 10 days after that date. After this, the selected candidates will have to declare in writing their acceptance. Unless a justification worthy of consideration is presented, if the declaration is not submitted within the referred period, it is considered that the candidate waivers the fellowship. In case of resignation or withdrawal of the selected candidate, the next candidate with the highest evaluation score will be notified immediately.

    Once the selection process is completed, the fellowship contract will be drawn up in accordance with the draft contract provided by the FCT.

    After the contracted period, the fellowship holder and supervisor must prepare the final report in accordance with the respective assessment criteria that were established.
