Overview
The Physical Plant is a department under Facilities Management and Campus
Services, a unit of the Division of Administration & Finance. The Physical
Plant provides the services to the entire campus such as carpentry, painting,
plumbing, and electrical services.
Position Summary
Under general direction of the Carpenter Foreman or designee, the Carpenter
performs skilled work in the trade of a Carpenter, including but not limited
to, doors, windows, floors and ceilings, adhering to accepted procedures and
techniques of the carpenter trade. The position also interacts with other
Physical Plant staff, Heating Plant staff, Grounds staff, Building Services
staff, Residential Facilities, Support staff, outside contractors and vendors.
This position represents NIU and the Physical Plant and conducts themselves in
a professional manner when working with members of the campus, vendors and the
community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Performs journeyman level carpentry work in the installation, maintenance,
and repair of doors, door hardware, windows, window hardware, floors,
ceilings, partitions, office equipment/furniture, classroom
fixtures/equipment, residential fixtures/equipment, and athletic
fixtures/equipment
Performs all necessary shop work, such as cleaning the shop, repairing
hardware and equipment. Construct and repair cabinets, shelving, bookcases
and all other objects.
Provides assistance during renovation of existing or on large scale
construction projects and other strategic initiatives
Plans, lays out, assembles and installs materials, equipment and fixtures
as required by scope of work
Responds to departmental request which include but not limited to
furniture, fixtures and equipment pertaining to carpentry
Performs scheduled preventative maintenance task as scheduled through work
management system (TMA) and assigned by Carpenter Foreman
Engages in the installation, maintaining and repairing of doors, window,
floors, ceilings, etc
Performs preventative maintenance task assigned to the Carpenter shop
through the TMA work order management system and assigned by the Carpenter
Shop Foreman or designee.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Successful completion of a recognized carpenter apprenticeship program or four (4) years (48 months) of full-time journeyman-level Carpenter experience (the trade for this purpose shall include work normally performed by carpenters, millworkers, floor layers, and any other classifications encompassed within the scope of work included in these trade categories).
Valid/current driver's license as required by the State of Illinois for the type of motor vehicle(s) to be operated by the incumbent.
Dependent upon institutional need, incumbents may be required to obtain job-
related certification or license, such as a valid Illinois Department of
Public Health Lead Abatement Worker License. Consistent with the Americans

KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA'S):
Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or
repair of houses, buildings, or other structures such as highways and
roads.
Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, regulations and
strategies to promote health and safety practices for the protection of
people, data, property, and institutions.
Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal
services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality
standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as
word processing, managing files and records, and other office procedures
and terminology.
Skill in time and resource management.
Skill in personnel resources management through motivating, developing,
and directing subordinates as they work, identifying the best skillsets
for completion of the job.
Skill in giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking
time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate,
and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and
weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to
problems.
Ability to operate personal computer with a general understanding of
application software, and an understanding of the Internet.
Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of
one's arms and legs and moving one's whole body, such as climbing,
lifting, balancing, walking, squatting, grabbing, carrying, pushing,
pulling, bending, stretching, twisting, reaching and handling of materials
in the course of completing work assignments.
Ability to stand and perform work duties for an extended period of time in
the process of completing projects and/or assignments.
