  • The Higher Institute of Statistics and Information Management of the Nova University of Lisbon – Information Management School (NOVA IMS) opens a call for the award of one (1) research scholarship in the area(s) of Machine Learning, Data Science or similar, under the Regulation of Research Scholarships of the FCT (RBI) and The Statute of the Research Fellow (EBI).

    The grant will be funded entirely by national funds through FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC) under the in the framework of the Project – DSAIPA/DS/0022/2018 - Online Gambling Addiction Detection (GADgET), concluded between Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT) and Nova Information Management School (NOVA IMS) – Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

    Work plan and goals to achieve:

    The selected candidate will be responsible for the activities related to the analysis of the vast amount of data that are daily collected from the Portuguese entity responsible for controlling the online gambling activities. The selected candidate will work at the definition, analysis, and implementation of machine learning algorithms that can identify patterns indicating the risk of gambling addiction for the online users. In addition, the selected candidate will be responsible for the scientific and societal communication of the results of the project. It is expected that the algorithms developed by the selected candidate are implemented in the existing system of the Portuguese entity that supervises the gambling activities.

    The selected candidate should write experiments, studies, technical reports within the project and contribute to the elaboration of scientific articles.

    The selected candidate should assist in organizing the documentation associated with the project.

    Scholarship duration:

    The scholarship will last for 6 months.

    Application Admissibility Requirements:

    It is essential, under penalty of non-admission to the Call, to attach the following documents to the application:

  • Motivation letter;

  • One (1) Letter of Recommendation;
  • Copy of the Master's degree certificate;
  • The candidate is allowed to add other elements that he/she will consider relevant of the excluded from the public competition.
  • The candidates who will not present the elements of the candidacy that are considered as mandatory will be excluded from the public competition.

    Amount of monthly maintenance allowance:

  • The amount of the scholarship corresponds to € 1.104,64, according to the table of values of the scholarships awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the (https: // www. ).
  • Monthly payment by means of bank transfer;
  • To the value of the scholarship will be added the insurance "Seguro Social Voluntário (SSV)" corresponding, as well as the insurance for personal accidents.
  • Selection process

    Evaluation Criteria:

    The evaluation takes into account the merits of the applicant.

    Applications considered admissible will be scored on a scale of 0 to 100 on each of the following evaluation criteria:

    Criterion A - Evaluation of the Curriculum Vitae with respect to knowledge, weighting 50%;

    Criterion B - Experience, weighting 50%.

    If the Jury deems it necessary, an interview may be held with the candidates placed in the first three positions according to the ordering resulting from the previous criteria. In this case, the final score will include the curriculum assessment (as described above), valued at 90%, and the interview, valued at 10%. If none of the candidates has the appropriate profile (overall assessment below 50%), the scholarship will not be awarded.

  • Form of publicity / notification of results:

    The results of the evaluation are communicated via e-mail to the e-mail address used by the applicant for the application.

    Additional comments

    Deadlines and procedures for prior hearing, complaint, and appeal:

    After communicating the provisional list of the results of the evaluation, the candidates have a period of 10 working days to, willingly, express themselves in the pre-hearing of interested parties, in accordance with Articles 121 and following of the Code of Administrative Procedure.

    The final decision shall be given after the analysis of the statements presented at the prior hearing of interested parties. A claim may be lodged within 15 working days or, alternatively, an appeal may be lodged within 30 working days, both counted from their notification. Applicants who choose to submit a complaint must address their statement to the members of the Selection Jury. Applicants who choose to appeal must address the appeal to the Selection Jury.

    Researcher Profiles:

    Students with a master degree in the areas of Information Management, Data Science, or similar areas may apply. Candidates should preferably have experience of study and/or work in areas related with machine learning and development of software, having knowledge in several machine learning algorithms and software development strategies. Experience in the development and implementation of machine learning methods.
