  • The project focuses on attitudes, values and practices regarding nature within the world's religions. It identifies ways of interacting with nature that inspire human responses of respect, protection, and appropriate uses of nature. This work in spiritual and religious ecology is opening the field of religious studies to a broader understanding of what religion is and what its mechanisms are, beyond Western interpretive categories. The project will first examine Buddhist-inspired worldviews in which humans are seen as an integral part of a cosmos dominated by nature. Secondly, the project will focus on Buddhist-inspired practices and articulations concerning nonhuman animals and human-animal relations.
