Business Analyst

Job Purpose

The post holder will act as a subject matter expert on the Student Information System. You will provide business analysis and related project services to support and develop the University Student Information System (Campus Solutions/MyCampus), ensuring continuing business improvement to reflect best practice, changing expectations, emerging opportunities and new requirements. You will work with stakeholders in Information Services and engage across our professional and academic services.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Work with the Assistant Director MyCampus Development and Infrastructure and Functional Leads to evaluate, document and test new software bundles, releases and upgrades from Oracle.

2. Collect requirements from users, define and document application requirements. Support the creation of business process flows for “as is” process and for proposed system changes. Challenge existing process and policy and contribute to the development of policy to ensure uniform processes throughout the University.

3. Where configuration and/or system development is required, contribute to the preparation of a business case for consideration by the Project Board.

4. Lead in implementation projects for approved enhancements and developments: a. gathering, analysing and documenting business requirements and translating into technical requirements b. playing significant role in the test cycle including the creation and execution of test plans c. leading change management associated with implementation of new functionality and enhancements including communication, training and user engagement

5. Maintain documentation in line with agreed quality standards, guidelines and procedures.

6. Using expert knowledge of the system and processes, work with the Functional Leads to evaluate whether user needs can be met through delivered functionality and/or through process change

7. Identify issues and risks which may arise from a range of sources, consider their impact, and apply initiative and judgement to resolve or escalate, as appropriate.

8. Employ appropriate skills and techniques to build relationships and help manage resistance to change. Using detailed knowledge of Campus Solutions and other University systems, assist, support and engage with colleagues across the University to support and embed changes.

9. Develop and continuously update a detailed knowledge of Campus Solutions functionality and related business processes. Ensure that specialist knowledge is used when engaging with users of the system through either support or development/ change activities.

10. Identify and attend relevant conferences, user groups/ networks such as on-line communities to develop and expand institutional knowledge base for Campus Solutions functional and technical topics.

11. Undertake other relevant training, professional and personal development.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential

• Either a Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), plus significant practical experience in a similar or related role(s); OR Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different roles;

Desirable

• Business Process Re-engineering techniques

• Change Management techniques and strategies

• Knowledge of relevant University policies, practices and procedures

• Detailed knowledge of at least one module of Campus Solutions and an overall understanding of the product. • Detailed knowledge of specific business functions and processes in a HE environment.

Skills

Essential

• Strong conceptual, analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make decisions and apply clear logic to this approach

• Ability to recognise problems and apply initiative and judgement to resolve these independently

• Ability to work independently with minimum supervision

• Proven ability to work effectively as part of a team

• Excellent IT skills

• Strong verbal and written skills, with the ability to lead meetings, run workshops, communicate technology concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences and influence and interact with colleagues and clients at all levels

• A positive and enthusiastic approach toward helping people

• Experience of proactively planning, organising and prioritising workload to deliver a project and responding to changing pressures or requirements

• Ability to work under pressure and to tight timescales to achieve objectives

• Commitment to personal development and the flexibility to take on new challenges, developing new skills and knowledge

Experience

Essential

• Relevant work experience including experience of working with Campus Solutions

• Experience of working within a higher education setting

• Experience of working on a significant project

• Experience of designing/ redesigning processes across different functional areas

• Experience in dealing with a wide range of customers and staff at all levels in an organisation and building effective relationships

• Understanding of student administration systems and processes

Desirable

• Experience of implementing change, including the organisational issues around change management

• Experience of large corporate systems in a range of functional or process areas

• Knowledge of application and use of Microsoft Project

• Knowledge of application and use of Microsoft Visio

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, £37,474 - £42,155 per annum.

These posts are full time and open ended.
