Project Description Determining habitat use and population dynamics for Montezuma quail is difficult due to their cryptic behavior and tendency to crouch and freeze when disturbed. Additionally, accessibility of habitat to study these birds is challenging due to mountainous conditions where they're located.
This research will utilize Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) techniques and methodologies to estimate occupancy and abundance of Montezuma quail in the Trans-Pecos. PAM allows for unattended and non-invasive monitoring by recording quail vocalizations using Autonomous Recording Units (ARU).
Job Description
What: • Program ARUs for deployment in the field • Field-deploy ARUs using defined protocoal • Monitor/refresh/replace ARU components, batteries, and units to maintain data collection protocol integrity • Assist with vocalized data management • Maintain vehicle and equipment in safe operating order • Complete other duties as assigned (ie: simultaneously operate ARUs to capture and organize vocalized data of northern saw-whet owls; help sort recordings according to species; misc. other duties)
When: Summer 2023
Where: • Davis Mountains Preserve (The Nature Conservancy), Jeff Davis County • Possibly surrounding private properties
