The Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC) is a unique, cross-disciplinary instructional center that provides educational and training opportunities to develop skilled professionals for the biomanufacturing industry. BTEC's audience includes NCSU students and professionals already involved in biomanufacturing or related industries. BTEC also provides bioprocess development and analytical services to a wide range of customers from academia and industry.

Essential Job Duties

Scientists at BTEC provide support for lab activities associated with NCSU undergraduate/graduate courses and lab activities associated with BTEC's Professional Development Short Course Program. In addition, laboratory managers support projects that are part of BTEC's Bioprocess and Analytical Services Program.

Essential Job Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Prepare lab activities for assigned courses in bioprocess operations.
  • Instruct course participants during lab sessions for courses.
  • Develop lab activities for courses covering a variety of topics related to biopharmaceutical production.
  • Provide hands-on support for bioprocess services and internal projects.
  • Develop and apply an operational knowledge of bioprocess equipment at a range of scales.
  • Source, commission, and train new staff members on use of new equipment.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and process issues, make minor repairs and adjustments as needed.
  • Communicate to service providers, clients, and collaborators within the university.
  • Create and revise process documentation.
  • Participate in activities to promote and support BTEC both internally and externally to the university.
  • Mentor students.
  • Ensure safety in laboratories.
  • Follow documented procedures and policies with the BTEC facility and at the University.
  • Other Responsibilities

    Perform any other tasks/responsibilities assigned by supervisor.

    Minimum Education and Experience

    Master's degree OR Bachelor's degree in a related field plus four (4) years of hands-on experience in analysis and/or biophysical characterization of proteins

    Required degree must be completed prior to start date

    Other Required Qualifications

  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with other staff and faculty at BTEC.
  • Effective presentation skills, including the ability to provide clear, concise and accurate information in both written and oral form.
  • Good problem solving and decision making skills.
  • Proficiency with word processing, PowerPoint and spreadsheet software.
  • Ability to execute process steps using process instructions and BTEC documentation practices.
  • Knowledge of good documentation practices.
  • Ability to learn operation of new bioprocessing equipment and to run new processes.
  • Knowledge of standard laboratory safety and biosafety practices.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Preferred Qualifications

    Hands-on experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Analytical test methods for raw materials and finished products.
  • Protein precipitation and crystallization
  • Biophysical characterization of proteins.
  • Lyophilization and spray drying cycle development and optimization.
  • Formulation development for freeze or spray dried products.
  • Required License(s) or Certification(s)
