The Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC) is a unique, cross-disciplinary instructional center that provides educational and training opportunities to develop skilled professionals for the biomanufacturing industry. BTEC's audience includes NCSU students and professionals already involved in biomanufacturing or related industries. BTEC also provides bioprocess development and analytical services to a wide range of customers from academia and industry.

Essential Job Duties

Essential Job Duties Include but are NOT limited to the following:

  • Execute and manage projects under BTEC's analytical development program including, but not limited to, sample receiving and custody, testing and reporting; grant proposal writing and reporting, coordination with collaborators (i.e. faculty and project manager(s)), technology transfer, and basic research.
  • Execute testing under BTEC's analytical services program including assay development, routine testing and characterization for proteins and/or nucleic acids.
  • Coordinate projects under BTEC's analytical services program; this may include, but it is not limited to, creating testing schedules, writing documentation, overseeing sample inventory, and communicating effectively with clients.
  • Support active instruction of North Carolina State University undergraduate and graduate students, as well as industry professionals in subject matters related to protein and/or nucleic acid testing/characterization. Specific topics include but are not limited to analytical test development and execution, assay validation, and product characterization.
  • Provide input on course and process improvements.
  • Identify equipment-related issues, identify root cause, and make minor repairs/adjustments.
  • Participate in activities to promote and support BTEC's mission, both internally and externally to the university.
  • Ensure safety in the laboratories.
  • Follow documented procedures and policies within the BTEC facility and at the University.
  • Perform any other tasks/responsibilities assigned by supervisor.
  • Other Responsibilities

    Additional duties to support salary supplement:

  • Identify and meet with potential analytical services clients.
  • Provide scope and budget estimates for analytical testing services agreements (TSAs).
  • Institute a tracking system for analytical TSAs. Communicate with finance staff as needed when ready to invoice.
  • Identify and collaborate with internal staff, as appropriate, to execute analytical TSAs, particularly those outside your area of expertise.
  • Serve as liaison to the bioprocess services group, to ensure that analytical portions of bioprocess TSAs are properly scoped, budgeted, and executed.
  • Manage the analytical service center, to ensure that project execution and administration (e.g., billing) take place as planned.
  • Minimum Education and Experience

  • B.S. in engineering or life science (chemical engineering, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, or related discipline) with a minimum of 6 years of experience in the life sciences or biopharmaceutical manufacturing industry or
  • M.S. in engineering or life science (chemical engineering, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, or related discipline) with a minimum of 2 years of experience in the life sciences or biopharmaceutical manufacturing industry
  • Hands-on experience in protein and/or nucleic acid characterization for example HPLC, LC-MS, MALDI, qPCR, ddPCR, general protein chemistry, amino acid analysis, etc.
  • Required degree must be completed prior to start date.

    Other Required Qualifications

  • Good written and verbal communication skills, and particularly the ability to present information clearly and concisely in oral and written form.
  • Ability to conduct multiple projects at the same time in and organized and independent manner.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work with different groups within BTEC, clients, interdisciplinary groups, and students from the University and from industry.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to adapt to constantly changing projects, priorities, clients and schedules.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety and biosafety practices.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment and processes.
  • Proficiency with Google suite, MS Office suite, specifically MS Word, MS Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. in engineering or life science (chemical engineering, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, or related discipline) with a minimum of 8 years of experience in the life sciences or biopharmaceutical manufacturing industry or PhD. in engineering or life science (chemical engineering, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, or related discipline).
  • Hands-on experience in HPLC and UPLC.
  • Hands-on experience with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
  • Hands-on experience in upstream and/or downstream bioprocessing, with emphasis in process development.
  • Knowledge of regulatory affairs and its impact to process development.
  • Knowledge of statistical design of experiments and associated computational tools
  • Experience in grant application and management.
  • Experience in teaching and mentoring students and colleagues.
  • Project management experience that led to successful completion of a project.
  • Required License(s) or Certification(s)
