    The International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory – INL (https:// www. inl.int), is the first and only International Intergovernmental Organisation in the world entirely focused on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.

    It was founded under an international legal framework to perform interdisciplinary research, deploy and communicate nanotechnology for the benefit of society. INL aims to be a recognised leading global nanotechnology innovation hub.

    SR &TD project specifications: INL participates in the Scientific Research and Technological Development project GRAPHSENS - Mid- and far-infrared plasmonic biosensing with graphene, co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and National Funds through the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT):

    (a) Name of the project : GRAPHSENS - Mid- and far-infrared plasmonic biosensing with graphene.

    (b) Reference number: POCI-01-0145-FEDER-028114, PTDC/FIS-MAC/28114/2017

    (c) Description: This project explores plasmons in graphene for a new spectroscopic technique in the THz and the mid-IR. Graphene plasmons exist in these spectral ranges in which noble-metal plasmons are not available. The excitation of surface plasmons in graphene produces huge resonances in the extinction spectrum of the material. These resonances amplify tremendously the absorption signal due to molecules deposited on graphene and therefore can be used as a tool for the spectral identification of small quantities of analytes, down to a monolayer

    (d) Scientific Area : Physics / Solid state physics

    Description of the functions and key primary responsibilities: The successful candidate will work on the tasks 4 and 5 of the SR&TD project, and will be assigned the following working plan:

  • Grow by Chemical Vapor Deposition graphene mono crystals and transfer them onto dielectric substrates.
  • Assist in the clean-room fabrication of graphene grids and gratings, made of contrasting dielectric materials embedded in IR-transparent Si substrates.
  • Assist in the fabrication and operation of the microfluidic system that controllably handles and delivers organic or biological molecules, as required for the device operation.
  • Measure the plasmonic response of the system in the FT-IR system at INL, modified to allow the application of a gate voltage to the graphene sensor.
  • Supervision: The work plan will be developed at the INL within the 2D Materials and Devices Group under the scientific guidance of Pedro Alpuim.

    Eligibility conditions, required qualifications and expertise: Candidates must comply with the following requirements:

    (a) To be enrolled in a Masters's course in Physics, Engineering Physics, Materials Engineering, Biophysics programme or in a diploma offered by a Portuguese higher education institution;

    (b) Be a Portuguese citizen, a European Union citizen, or a non-European Union Citizen residing in Portugal;

    Candidates must enclose the following supporting documents in pdf format, failing which the application will not be considered for evaluation:

    (a) Cover letter;

    (b) Curriculum Vitae;

    (c) Official transcripts of all relevant academic degrees;

    (d) Declaration issued by the Portuguese higher education institution at which the Candidate is enrolled (in the PhD programme or diploma) accepting that the activities to be developed at INL will be duly considered as part of the work towards the PhD's degree or diploma and committing to enter into an agreement with INL, detailing the terms and conditions for the collaboration, if the candidate is selected (model to be provided by INL);

    (e) Copy of identification document;

    (f) For non-EU Citizens residing in Portugal, documental evidence attesting the legal right to reside in Portugal.

    Concerning paragraph (c) (‘official transcripts of all relevant academic degrees'), please bear in mind that academic degrees or diplomas awarded by higher education institutions outside Portugal must be recognised according to the Portuguese legal framework, as this is a mandatory requirement for accessing Portuguese public funds for research, technology and innovation.

    Selection Criteria

    Candidates will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • Curriculum vitae: 50%
  • Interview(s): 50%
  • Selection Committee

    The selection of candidates will be carried out by a Selection Committee consisting of the following persons:
