The core purpose of the Office for Research (Research) is to advance Rutger's preeminence in research and spur economic growth. This office provides services university-wide to support the faculty's research and strategically leads the university's economic development activities. Our functions range from supporting the identification of new research funding opportunities and submission of grants proposals to post-award financial management and research regulatory affairs. The office directs research commercialization, including patenting and licensing and serves as a central point for industry access.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Biomedical/Preclinical Imaging Center Manager for the Office for Research. As part of the Office for Research, under the direction of the Director of Rutgers University Molecular Imaging Center (RUMIC), this position with minimal supervision manages and maintains a preclinical (small animal) molecular imaging facility using state-of-the-art imaging equipment such as magnetic resonance imagers (MRI), optical imagers (e.g. IVIS 200, Single Photon/Positron Emission Tomography (SPECT/PET), Computerized Tomography (CT) and Ultra-high Frequency Ultrasound.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Operates and maintains equipment, trains, and supervises research faculty, staff, and students in operation of selected equipment, orders supplies/contrast agents/radiopharmaceutical as needed, and facilitates invoicing for imaging sessions.
  • Provides technical animal research services such as dosing animals, performing minor surgery, and anesthesia, and conducts imaging sessions and image analysis.
  • Provides day-to-day management of the core rodent molecular imaging center.
  • Supplies/contrast agents/radiopharmaceuticals as needed.
  • Provides data for invoicing users by the Office for Research.
  • Maintains computer hardware and software dedicated to imaging equipment.

    Minimum Education and Experience

  • Masters Degree in biological or engineering field, or comparable education, training, and experience.
  • A minimum five years' experience and training in conduct of in vivo imaging using all or most of the following equipment: MRI, optical imaging, PET/CT, and Ultrasound.
  • Certifications/Licenses Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience working with laboratory rodents: handling, husbandry, anesthesia, administration of drugs, and collection of biological specimens.
  • Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and writing) with faculty researchers and understand complex experimental procedures.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. preferred in biological or engineering field, or comparable education, training, and/or experience.
  • Experience in managing a core research facility operated on a fee-for- service basis.
  • Supervisory experience in managing technical personnel in an imaging facility or similar setting.
  • Advanced training in operation of MRI, optical imaging, SPECT/PET/CT, rodent ultrasound.

  • Bruker ICON 1T MRI system
  • SkyScan 1172 microCT imaging systems
  • Faxatron
  • VisualSonics 3100 Ultra-high Frequency Ultrasound
  • Proprietary imaging software for all of the above equipment
  • Isoflurane gas anesthesia systems
  • Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Laboratory environment.
  • Will work with highly radioactive reagents and Schedule II controlled substances.
  • Potential exposure to animal dander, fluids, and soiled waste as well as cleaning chemicals. The wearing of PPE could increase body temperature.
  • Special Conditions

  • Will participate in the Rutgers Occupational Health Program for Animal Workers – must undergo post-offer medical evaluation and be approved to work with rodents.
