The Biomarker Mass Spectrometry Facility provides critical analytical support to UNC researchers for qualitative and quantitative assessment of environmental contaminants and biomarkers using mass spectrometry. The Facility houses an AB Sciex 6500 mass spectrometer, Thermo TSQ mass spectrometers, Agilent Q-TOF, Agilent 7500 ICP-MS, and UPLC/nano-LC systems. Areas of focus for the Facility include characterization of chemical reaction products, identification and quantitation of metabolites, quantitation of environmental chemicals, measurement of DNA adducts, multi-element analysis and arsenic speciation in numerous environmental and biological matrices.

The Biomarker Mass Spectrometry (MS) Research Scientist provides leadership and direction in the management of research and experiential learning activities that involve the MS laboratory. He/she supports the instructional and research mission of the Department through faculty and student engagement by providing support, consultation and expertise in analytical chemistry involving mass spectrometry. This includes method development, quality assurance, data analysis, student training, and instrument maintenance.

Major responsibilities will include managing the operation of the Biomarker Mass Spectrometry Recharge Facility; developing analytical methods to support research , maintaining and upgrading the mass spectrometry and other instrument, training the users on instrumentation and sample analysis; providing expertise in method development and sample analysis; collaborating with researchers within and outside of ESE to support grant applications and research projects.

The successful candidate will have strong background and demonstrated expertise in mass spectrometry and method development to support research activities of the Department. The incumbent will also contribute to the department's educational goals by providing practical training in research skills and will have the opportunity to assist in developing laboratory courses.

Educational Requirements

Required: Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Preferred: Ph.D. in analytical Chemistry, or MS with 5 years of experience or related field from appropriately accredited institutions.

Qualifications and Experience

Three or more years' experience in mass spectrometry or relevant research experience. Demonstrated experience in operating and maintaining modern mass spectrometers, preparing and loading samples, software and data analysis. Expertise in operating and maintaining a range of mass spectrometry platforms, such as LC-MS and ICP-MS. Demonstrated expertise in method development for the detection and quantitation of compounds in diverse environmental and biological samples. Experience in training students and other users in method development and sample analysis. Excellent written and oral communication skills are needed.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with mass spectrometry of AB Sciex, Agilent and Thermo. Capacity and strong motivation for learning new technical skills independently Outstanding communication skills. Experience and strong interest in training and working with students and postdoctoral trainees. Experience in writing grant proposals and manuscripts.
