About the Department
The Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC) is a
unique, cross-disciplinary instructional center that provides educational and
training opportunities to develop skilled professionals for the
biomanufacturing industry. BTEC's audience includes NCSU students and
professionals already involved in biomanufacturing or related industries. BTEC
also provides bioprocess development and analytical services to a wide range
of customers from academia and industry.
Essential Job Duties
Biomanufacturing Training Associates (BTAs) at BTEC provide support for lab
activities associated with NCSU undergraduate/graduate courses and lab
activities associated with BTEC's Professional Development Short Course
Program. In addition, BTAs support projects that are part of BTEC's Bioprocess
and Analytical Services Program.
Essential Job Duties Include but are not limited to:
Plan, execute and document daily activities in glasswash, sterilization
and dispensing of bioprocess intermediates for BTEC's intermediate-scale
and large-scale laboratories.
Assist BTEC teaching staff in instruction of NCSU and adult students
during lab activities.
Operate process vessels and/or auxiliary equipment for compounding (media
and buffer); perform material dispensing (material handling, labeling,
weighing, weight check); provide biomanufacturing support (solution
preparation, glasswash, sterilization); perform aseptic operations;
provide secondary support in bioprocess operations to include cell
culture, fermentation or purification.
Provide operational support for projects that are part of BTEC's
Bioprocess Services program.
Support start-up and commission new processing equipment.
Identify and report equipment-related issues.
Comply with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), as implemented
by BTEC.
Ensure safety in laboratories.
Follow documented procedures and policies within the BTEC facility and at
the University.
Perform any other tasks/responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
Other Responsibilities
Specific work responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, one or
more of the following:
Upstream:
Operate process vessels (stainless steel stirred tank and/or disposable
bioreactors) at a range of scales (2L – 300L) to grow bacteria, yeast,
mammalian, insect and or/plant cells, etc.
Downstream:
Perform recovery or purification operations, including centrifugation,
depth filtration, chromatography, ultrafiltration, and bulk filling.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
BS degree in science or engineering (Biology, Biochemistry,
Biotechnology, Engineering, or related discipline).
Two years of hands-on experience in experimental design and execution in
one or more of the following fields:
Manufacturing of bacteria, yeast, or mammalian cell culture.
Operation of small scale (1-2 L) fermentation vessels.
Genetic engineering of bacteria, yeast or mammalian cells.
Required degree must be completed prior to start date
Other Required Qualifications
Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with other
operations staff and faculty at BTEC.
Ability to prepare lab activities necessary for assigned courses with
input from senior staff.
Ability to execute process steps using documentation and BTEC
documentation practices; ability to create and revise documentation.
Ability to learn operation of new bioprocessing equipment and to run new
processes.
Knowledge of typical laboratory safety and biosafety practices.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
Proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet software.
Good documentation practices within a GLP (Good Laboratory Practices) or
GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) environment.
Hands-on knowledge of operation of bioprocessing support equipment; cell
culture, fermentation, or purification equipment; and the ability to
transfer that knowledge to students.
