6:30 am – 3:00 pm; Monday – Friday; with variable hours during the summer months 6:00 am – 2:30pm.

This position is designated as ‘essential' and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the campus as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.

Primary Purpose of Position

This position contributes to the overall appearance and condition of the university's buildings, academic and office spaces. This position also assists in maintaining the university facilities in good working order and maintaining an overall pleasant working, teaching, and learning environment. This position is to support the associated university buildings and infrastructure, along with assisting grounds and landscaping in the development of expanded highly maintained landscaped areas of campus. The maintenance includes installation of drainage, snow and ice removal, concrete and paver repair, grading, rip rap and erosion repair which requires basic knowledge of materials, elemental horticulture, and the skill to fulfill these duties.

Minimum Education/Experience

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, and one year of experience in the area assigned; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Essential Job Duties

1. Daily work activities include the installation and maintenance of Grounds Department Systems, including installation and repair of concrete, asphalt, irrigation, heavy equipment operator. 2. Utilize applicable trades/maintenance techniques and tools. 3. Make repairs and perform locates to underground utilities (water, sewer, other), and related systems across campus. 4. Develop skills in procedures, techniques, tools, materials and equipment appropriate to grounds maintenance. 5. Maintain, repair, place, fabricate, install, alter, construct and design of facility components. 6. Conduct campus utility locates using maps and related locate equipment. 7. Troubleshoot and identify problems, determine possible solutions, and actively work to resolve the issues. 8. May assist higher level technicians in troubleshooting, isolating, and resolving malfunctions in electrical, HVAC or plumbing systems throughout the campus. 9. Demonstrate an understanding of applicable policies and procedures, and maintain conditions that ensure a healthy and safe working environment. 11. Operate and use campus vehicles and equipment in a safe manner. 12. Understand and comply with University safety, State, and OSHA requirements.

Other Work Responsibilities

1. Assist the arborist with tree work/removal as needed. 2. Assist the spray technician with any projects as needed. 3. Assist the irrigation manager with any projects as needed. 4. Assist with the moving of office furniture, and help with special event setups and tear downs. 5. Report to Facilities Management when called to assist with clearing and cleaning of streets, sidewalks, steps and other areas of obstructions, such as snow, ice trees, etc. during inclement weather, usually requires overtime hours, weekends, and holidays. Sometimes requires early morning travel in marginal weather conditions and long working hours. 6. Perform other duties as assigned and/or delegated to support all grounds and maintenance operations.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

1. Minimum of two years' experience with repair of concrete, asphalt, irrigation, heavy equipment operation, and troubleshooting standard facilities maintenance issues. 2. Through knowledge and expert experience desired in wide array of heavy equipment operation including backhoes, lulls, bulldozers, skid steers, dump trucks and other heavy equipment operation related to the landscape industry. 3. Thorough knowledge and experience is desired in wide array of hardscape installations and materials from concrete, pavers, brick, stone, asphalt, gravel and other hardscape installation materials related to the landscape industry. 4. Knowledge in mechanical and electrical maintenance in an industrial or commercial setting preferred. 5. Understand and gain knowledge of all safety and security regulations. 6. Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, foot and eye protection, protective hearing devices (earplugs, muffs), hard hats. 7. Ability to operate welding, cutting and fabrication equipment is desired. 8. Effective skills in verbal, written and interpersonal communications. 9. Excellent communication skills are preferred. 10. Computer literacy preferred. 11. Ability to effectively work/interact with persons from different backgrounds and cultures. 12. Ability to foster and create an atmosphere of teamwork.
