Beamline Scientist

Job ID 3681 Date posted 05/19/2023

Brookhaven National Laboratory (www. bnl.gov) delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation's future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.

Organizational Overview

The National Synchrotron Light Source-II (NSLS-II) at Brookhaven National Laboratory is seeking exceptional candidates for the beamline scientist for the X-ray Powder Diffraction (XPD) beamline. As part of the Hard X-ray Scattering & Spectroscopy (HXSS) Program at the NSLS-II, the XPD beamline is a high energy & high-flux wiggler diffraction beamline, with advanced, high throughput and in situ and operando instrumentation. The XPD beamline offers world-class capabilities for studying the complex science of energy conversion and storage systems, including batteries, fuel cells, heterogeneous catalysts. The core mission of XPD is to observe materials under conditions that are far from equilibrium, non-ambient or non-static, i.e., as a function of a process parameter like T, P, pH, reactive gases, electric or magnetic field.

Position Description

The candidate will be working as a beamline scientist together with the XPD lead beamline scientist. The successful candidate will support the high-volume user program at XPD. The candidate will be encouraged to participate in internal and external scientific & technical collaborations that leverage the unique capabilities of the beamline, and actively work for enhancing the beamline throughput, productivity, and impact.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • user support at XPD beamline
  • collaboration with internal staff and external users for scientific & technical advancement
  • actively work for enhancing the beamline throughput and productivity (including remote user operation).
  • designing, implementing, and maintaining new in-situ/operando capabilities at the XPD beamline.
  • development of automation, design of complex in-situ experiments,
  • work with NSLS II staff in development of streamlined data acquisition & processing protocols using high-performance computing at the beamline.
  • Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related engineering field.
  • At least four years of experimental work and publications applying Synchrotron X-ray Powder Diffraction in high-impact sciences.
  • Proven expertise with X-ray Powder Diffraction data reduction, data analysis, and modeling of the atomic structures.
  • Intermediate level knowledge of scientific programming in Python
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively in a team environment with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technical staff, and users.
  • Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

At least 2 years of experience in supporting users at a synchrotron beamline facility.
Prior experience in the design, installation, commissioning, and operation of components and/or instruments for synchrotron X-ray Diffraction beamlines.
Experience in high throughout synchrotron data collection including controls, robotics, and automation.
Experience with operation of high energy X-ray optics and detectors.
Established network or collaborations with the Powder Diffraction community.
Proposed personal research interest aligned with the focus scientific goals of the NSLS-II.
Demonstrated expertise of Python programming language in data acquisition and/or analysis.

Other information: The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level contingent upon their depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills.
