Title AY23-24 Costume Shop Assistant (Non-Work Study)
Position Description
If you are interested in hands-on, creative work the Costume Shop is an
excellent place to begin! We support a total of six productions per year for
the Theater and Dance departments at BSU. You will learn technical skills used
for building and altering costumes, practical organization skills, and you
will have opportunities to apply creative problem solving to your everyday
work.
In the Costume Shop you will:
Assist with all costume activities in preparation for department
productions including hand sewing, machine sewing, alterations,
restorations, cutting fabric, and crafting projects under the supervision
of the Costume Director.
Duties may include limited data entry and other appropriate communications
work.
Maintain efficient organization and cleanliness of the shop and storage
areas.
Assist in the measurement of cast members as needed.
Assist in the care of costume garments including laundering, ironing, and
steaming.
Wardrobe duties include preparation of strike and strike clean up
including preparing the dressing rooms, writing up costume lists, and
setting up the back stage area. Also washing and restocking costumes
following strike.
Assist in costume fittings as needed
Preferred Qualifications
Some sewing experience required
Enthusiasm for costume, clothing, fashion, and sewing.
Patience
Close attention to detail
Tenacity and a commitment to quality and accuracy on all projects
Openness to creative problem solving and critical thinking
Ability to remain calm and focused when in a busy environment
Ability to be a team player and to work individually depending on what is
required
A desire to work creatively
Ability to listen well, follow direction, and ask questions when necessary
Physical Demands
Students must be able to lift 25 lbs., climb and descend ladders and stairs.
