The Department of Health Sciences Education and Pathology at the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine at Peoria (UICOMP) is currently seeking to hire a medical educator with expertise in biochemistry to serve as campus course director for an integrated organ segment based curriculum. The individual will be based at the Peoria campus and participate in the delivery of an integrated collaborative curriculum with peers from across the University of Illinois College of Medicine. The local campus course director (LCD) serves as a faculty head for the design, development, and successful delivery of a course at UICOMP. In this role, they will serve as a major collaborator of the college-wide director, project manager, and local campus course coordinator. The local campus course director must have excellent communication and organizational skills, strong ability to build relationships with faculty, ability to implement best practices in education at their campus, and knowledge to advise the course on a college wide and local level. We are seeking innovative educators with energy and commitment to medical student education. The successful candidate must be interested in curriculum development and integration with the clinical sciences, working collaboratively with like-minded and talented individuals across the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine campuses. Having additional skills, interest in simulation education or medical humanities is preferred. The College of Medicine is committed to active learning, clinical relevance, and measurement of educational outcomes. The UICOMP campus provides education for over 240 medical students and over 300 residents and fellows in 18 disciplines. Two major academic affiliate hospitals are located within 6 blocks of the medical school campus and contain over 850 hospital beds. The medical school is a partner in the new 67,000 square foot Jump Simulation Center (www. jumpsimulation.org) offering some truly unique opportunities for innovative curriculum. JUMP provides state of the art simulation for use in both education and assessment. Candidates will be responsible for developing and delivering teaching material on medical biochemistry and other basic science content needed for the practice of clinical medicine. In addition to medical biochemistry, small group facilitation in the preclinical curriculum including but not limited to simulation and medical humanities. The biochemistry curriculum is taught in both the preclinical years and clinical years with opportunities to develop and implement medical biochemistry electives in Phase III of the medical school curriculum. The selected individuals will also have administrative responsibilities including coordination with other courses, generation of appropriate evaluation tools, and cross campus collaborations. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry or related field, or an M.D./D.O. with Biochemistry expertise. Previous experience in teaching collegiate or medical school Biochemistry or related courses with understanding of technology available to teach Biochemistry is required. Preference is given to those who have participated in active learning and team teaching, interest in simulation, and have a record of educational scholarship. Duties:

  • Develop teaching material for instructional delivery of biochemistry curriculum principles needed for the practice of clinical medicine
  • Serve as the local campus course director and coordinate the implementation, learner assessment and evaluation of the course at UICOMP in collaboration with the college wide course director, project manager and course coordinator
  • Participate in teaching through lectures and other active learning methodologies including flipped classroom, online lectures, and Team Based Learning (TBL)
  • Collaborate with other UICOM sites on course schedules, materials, and exams
  • Develop educational modules and videos for independent study and flipped classroom
  • Develop and implement electives in the clinical years that integrates basic science with clinical science
  • Work collaboratively with faculty from other basic science/clinical science departments in curricular development
  • Develop various assessment tools to assess medical students including NBME style multiple-choice questions; narrative assessments.
  • Participate in faculty development programs to enhance teaching and educational skills
  • Participate in developing and implementing sessions in other areas of focus such as medical humanities, simulation or other basic science subjects.
  • Conduct scholarly activity in the area of medical education research.
  • Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry or related field, or an M.D. / D.O. with Biochemistry expertise.
  • Previous experience in teaching collegiate or medical school Biochemistry or related courses with understanding of technology available to teach Biochemistry is required.
  • Preference is given to those who have participated in active learning and team teaching, interest in simulation, and have a record of educational scholarship.
