Primary Purpose of the Position

Faculty in the Department of Healthcare Management in the School of Health Sciences at Winston-Salem State University seek applications for a full-time, nine-month Associate Professor of Healthcare Management with a begin date of August 1, 2022. The successful candidate will provide student-centered academic and healthcare managerial instruction that fosters an atmosphere of student success, engagement, and the creative exchange of ideas. The position requires thoughtful and skilled academic advising, counseling and guidance to achieve professional goals and employment. The faculty member is responsible for conducting and maintaining an active line of scholarly research within the discipline area that results in publication in peer-reviewed journals and scholarly presentations. The faculty member will participate in service activities for the department, university, and community as well as collaborate with community stakeholders and other professional organizations. The tenure-track assistant or associate professor will teach in the undergraduate and graduate programs

Department Required Skills

Faculty in the Department of Healthcare Management seek exceptional candidates who demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching healthcare management. The following qualifications and skills are required for this position:

  • A terminal degree (i.e. PhD, JD, DrPH, DHA) in healthcare, management, or a related field from an accredited institution of higher learning is required.
  • Must demonstrate that prior work aligns with the University's mission, including liberal education, social justice, and student-centeredness.
  • Must demonstrate a commitment to student-centeredness, cultural competence, and health equity.
  • Must demonstrate evidence that she or he has the ability to utilize a variety of engaging learning methods and techniques in the classroom, including assignments and projects designed to foster and promote healthcare management knowledge and digital literacy.
  • Must provide demonstrable evidence that she or he has experience utilizing Learning Management Systems (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas) and learning management software (e.g., D2L Brightspace) to engage undergraduate or graduate students in high quality instruction.
  • All faculty and staff are required to attend monthly Department meetings and participate in shared governance. A high level of professionalism is essential, conforming with the Code of Ethics and Ethics Policy of Winston- Salem State University.

    Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

    Faculty in the Department of Healthcare Management will give additional consideration to candidates who demonstrate the following preferred skills and experiences:

  • Five years professional experience in Health Services Management
  • Experience with competency-based education
  • Previous experience establishing and sustaining partnerships with community partners
  • Experience representing an academic department or professional organization by collaborating with civic and social groups.

    Faculty in the Department of Healthcare Management seek a committed and engaged faculty member who will perform specific duties at a high level. These duties include but are not limited to the following:

    Teaching and Advising

  • Adequately prepare all course materials and lessons for healthcare management courses, consistent with the program's competency model.
  • Provide each student with clear course expectations, evaluations, timelines, and an approved syllabus.
  • Provide engaging and relevant assignments for students with learning outcomes applicable to the field.
  • Suitably challenge, engage, serve, and communicate with students to encourage their participation and learning while maintaining mutual value and respect.
  • Complete gradebooks, mid-term, and final grade submission, learning assessments and final exam assessments on a timely basis, and respond to student questions on a timely basis.
  • Ensure course and program learning outcomes are delivered as defined by the syllabus.
  • Engage in effective student academic advising throughout the academic year.
  • Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity

  • Must have an evolving research agenda.
  • Conduct and maintain an active line of scholarly research within the healthcare management discipline that results in publications in peer- reviewed journals.
  • Must facilitate presentations at well-respected local, state, national and international professional conferences and meetings within the healthcare management discipline.
  • Will engage in procuring sponsored research with interdisciplinary teams.
  • University, Professional, and Community Service and Engagement

  • Attend consistently departmental and College meetings.
  • Participate in service activities for the department, university, and community
  • Collaborate with community stakeholders and other professional organizations.
  • Maintain membership in discipline-specific professional organizations.
  • Assist discipline-specific professional organizations with reviews of conference proposals, peer-reviewed journal articles, and other professional engagement opportunities.
  • Serve on community-oriented committees, boards, and commissions relative to healthcare management.
