The Music Department at North Carolina Central University seeks an Associate Professor of Music in Jazz Studies. This is a tenured/ tenure track, full-time position to begin August 2021.

Teaching responsibilities include a three-quarter teaching load to include some combination of applied lessons, ensembles, jazz pedagogy, jazz improvisation, jazz arranging, and composition courses according to departmental needs. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the position calls for a candidate who will serve as the Coordinator of the Jazz Studies Program.

The Coordinator of Jazz Studies will administrate various aspects of the undergraduate and graduate jazz program including artistic direction of jazz ensembles and combos, auditions, fundraising and promotions, student personnel, planning/administering events such as the NCCU Annual Jazz Festival and Fall Guest Artist Series, touring, alumni communications, and public and professional service engagements. This person also must work closely and effectively with the jazz faculty and should have strong organizational skills.

As a member of the faculty, the successful candidate will be expected to perform additional duties as assigned and required by the Music Department and the University including recruiting students, building professional relationships with local, regional, national, and international jazz organizations, serving as a liaison to high school music programs, participating in department, university, and professional service and maintaining a roster of creative and/or scholarly activities.

Minimum Qualifications: A Master's Degree in Music, Doctorate preferred, with at least one degree in Jazz Performance or Music Education, or equivalent experience.

Candidates must have a minimum of seven years of prior teaching experience at the college level, strong interpersonal skills, evidence of significant professional and scholarly experience, and demonstrated ability to attract and retain students.

Candidates must have a record of national and international jazz performance as a side person and a leader, excellent jazz arranging, composition, and improvisational skills, expertise with pedagogy associated with a variety of jazz styles, a record of collegiality, working knowledge of music technology, and evidence of awards and recognition for professional and academic achievements.
