About this Opportunity
The School of Information Technology & Electrical Engineering seeks to appoint
an established research leader in Computer Science who shows strong
accomplishment in one or multiple focus areas including: Computer vision and
multimedia, Machine Learning, Data mining, Information retrieval, and Big data
The position of Associate Professor is responsible for undertaking research;
teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level including course
coordination; higher degree research student supervision; and service roles at
School or University level.
The appointee will contribute to the University's strategic initiative on the
growth of Computer Science talent. The appointee will have the opportunity to
leverage significant industry and international networks, and work on cutting-
edge technologies on the front-line of a number of applications areas
including but not limited to agriculture, energy, manufacturing, health, IoT,
transport and utilities.
Coordinate courses, prepare and deliver lectures and tutorials, and
undertake assessment and marking for undergraduate and postgraduate
Participate in the development of new programs and course material in the
area of focus, by consulting with program advisors and stakeholders,
ensuring courses are engaging, relevant and contemporary.
Coordinate and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Make
original contributions to teaching which expand knowledge or practice in
the relevant discipline.
Participate in educational practice and innovative curriculum design
including shorter form credentials, online learning, and alternative
Understand and apply University Rules relevant to teaching and learning
Provide high quality service to students, including academic counselling
Provide support to other academic positions as needed and during absences.
Drive the ongoing improvement and development of new programs or a
significant aspect of a program to meet industry and educational
Exhibit exemplary design in curricular and assessment practices that
contributes to enhanced student learning outcomes.
Engage in independent and/or team research program, towards national and
international recognition and impact in the research area.
Conduct research and publish scholarly papers in both academic peer-
reviewed and professional journals that contribute to the School's
strategic research strengths.
Encourage, initiate and coordinate strategic collaborative research
projects, especially projects that are interdisciplinary and contribute to
the strategic direction of the School
Consistently lead, obtain and successfully manage significant external
competitive research grants.
Supervision and Researcher Development
Participate in research training and supervision and demonstrate an active
and effective record of principal supervision of research higher degree
Effectively lead and develop employee performance and conduct by providing
feedback, coaching, and professional development.
Lead a research team and foster the research activities of others
Build and lead a research team, developing and mentoring more junior
academics and researchers.
Citizenship and Service
Create, foster, and enhance national and international links with relevant
industry, government departments, universities, professional bodies and
the wider community to assist the advancement of University, Faculty and
School strategic objectives
Shows leadership of self and others through mentoring, collaboration and a
responsibility for staff wellbeing.
Contribute to the processes that enable the academic team to manage the
work of the School, including participate in School decision-making and
serve on School committees
Perform a range of high-level administrative functions in the School and
any other duties as reasonably directed by your supervisor.
Develop and maintain significant networks across the University,
communities and industries and foster an environment where networks and
relationships are built and maintained.

A PhD in Computer Science or a related field with international
recognition in the area of expertise and an excellent record of
publications in reputed refereed journals and conferences
Demonstrated research leadership in one or more of the listed focus areas
with evidence of outstanding contribution to research, including high-
level success in gaining significant external grant funds
Ability to successfully lead a research team, and mentor less experienced
staff and early career researchers
An established record of course coordination and in advancing the
development and continuous innovation of new programs, curriculum design
and course material in the discipline area
Evidence of an exceptional level of quality undergraduate and postgraduate
teaching and an active and effective record of principal supervision of
research higher degree students to completion
Knowledge of state-of-art technologies and industry trends in focus areas
Demonstrated leadership in liaising and collaborating with external
agencies and industry to develop collaborative research initiatives
An ability to establish effective relationships and to represent and
promote the school at a university and wider community level, including
industry, government and professional bodies
Experience in research prototype and systems development
Experience in applied research in one or more domain area including but
not limited to energy, agriculture, manufacturing, health, IoT, transport
The position will report operationally to Discipline Leader for Data Science
at School of ITEE.
What We Can Offer
This is a full-time (100% FTE), continuing position at Academic Level D.
The full-time equivalent base salary for an Academic Level D will be in the
range $149,761 - $164,991 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will
be in the range $175,220 – 193,040 per annum.
