Job summary

The School of Engineering at the University of Birmingham seeks to recruit an outstanding civil engineer for the role of Programme Director and Associate Professor in Civil Engineering (Teaching focused) based at the University of Birmingham, Dubai campus. The post-holder will work closely with the Engineering Subject lead, module leads and other critical academics at the Edgbaston Campus who contribute to and deliver the Civil Engineering and Construction Management Programmes.

The school's strengths are geotechnical and structural engineering, asset management and infrastructure engineering. Applicants should be capable of teaching a broad base of construction management modules but may have a particular focus in terms of civil engineering scholarship.

Based on the UoB Dubai campus, the post holder will act as the Civil Engineering Programme Director. They will be expected to contribute widely to the taught modules delivered as part of this programme in line with their subject knowledge, work with Edgbaston-based module leads to shape and provide the programme in line with local needs, supervise dissertation projects, and eventually, develop new Civil Engineering or complementary modules. They will be essential in developing Dubai-based teaching on Civil Engineering, Construction Management and related disciplines and keep an active and collaborative link with staff developing the teaching and research in Birmingham. As such, they will be contributing at a senior level on a sustained basis to the whole range of teaching leadership and administration. In addition, they will be expected to contribute to academic citizenship, likely to be demonstrated through generous, mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with all staff and students.

Teaching will include (a) development and leadership of effective teaching programmes or equivalent; and (b) enhancement of the student experience or employability that are of manifest benefit to the College and the University. It is expected that you will demonstrate a significant contribution to the advancement of teaching (policy, practice, standards) of the subject and provide leadership in teaching and learning that is innovative to the subject area or institution, with a significant contribution to the debate nationally about teaching.

Management and administration will include Departmental/School leadership and management activity with university-wide involvement – for example, through sustained high value impact knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement or similar activities.

Scope of the role

Contribute to the whole range of teaching and administration.

Teaching is likely to include: (a) development (including programme/module review) and leadership of the civil engineering programmes in Dubai; and (b) enhancement of the student experience or employability, that is of manifest benefit to the College and the University. The role will typically also involve developing and advising others, including (a) providing expert advice to staff and students and (b) developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.

Teaching-focused role-holders should advance the practice of teaching in their modules within the school, take a role in leading curriculum development, and play an essential role in student academic support.

They should also deliver excellent teaching that inspires students and is informed by discipline-based research.

Management and administration are likely to involve contributions at the school level, such as Teaching Committee, and making an essential contribution to some managerial/leadership (e.g. working groups) within the University. This activity may include developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement, widening participation, schools outreach, or similar activities at the school level or further within the University.

Main Duties/Responsibilities

Teaching focused Lecturer role-holders will:

  • Contribute to leading curriculum development and renewal
  • Make a significant contribution to the pedagogical knowledge base of construction management that advances teaching through the enhancement of practice, the development of teaching resources and practice-based research
  • Lead on the management and the development of approaches to teaching and learning, including designing innovative approaches and supporting colleagues to use them in the subject area or institution.
  • Deliver (where appropriate to the discipline) specific professional programmes
  • Advance the practice of teaching in construction management within the school, and play an essential role in student academic support
  • Inform their teaching practice by discipline-based research and scholarship
  • Frequently update their expertise, and undertake personal, professional development in teaching, including self-reflection on own teaching, using student and peer review feedback, to enhance own teaching and learning processes
  • Lead the development of new and appropriate approaches to learning and teaching.
  • Lead sustained high-value impact in knowledge transfer and enterprise (including
  • business engagement, public engagement) that enhances the student experience and employability and is of manifest benefit to learning and teaching in the College and the University
  • Undertake own teaching, which will include teaching and examining courses at various levels, planning, and reviewing own teaching approaches, developing programme proposals, supervision, marking and examining. You will ensure that your teaching practice is informed by discipline-based research by participating in the school's research culture.
  • In addition, they may play an essential role in the recruitment and admission of students; and co-supervise, with research, focused or research and teaching focused member of staff, doctoral students to completion.
  • Learning and Teaching

  • To use various methods of teaching and advising individuals and groups of undergraduates, postgraduates, or CPD students.
  • Where appropriate to the discipline, this may include:
  • Teach and examine courses at a range of levels in core construction management subjects, including, for example, engineering project and risk management, sustainable construction, and systems engineering
  • Deliver excellent teaching that inspires students and is informed by discipline-based research
  • Supervise undergraduate and MSc projects, student dissertations and practical work
  • Plan and review own teaching approaches and act as a mentor to encourage others to do the same
  • Lead the design of teaching programmes more widely in the school, as appropriate
  • Where appropriate, undertake and develop the full range of responsibilities concerning supervision, marking and examining (including summative assessment, assessed work contributing to the final award – as a mark or as credit - such as unseen examinations, essays dissertations or presentations)
  • Use appropriate approaches to learning and teaching in their field
  • Disseminate appropriate practices through suitable media
  • Develop and advise others on learning and teaching tasks and methods
  • Devise & supervise projects, student dissertations and practical work
  • Management/Administration

    Lead the Department/ School activities and represent the School on College/ University committees or working groups, including:

  • Make essential contributions to the development and running of the Department or School, for example, leading activity on teaching assessment
  • Lead successful international engagement at the School or College level
  • Develop and manage staff and resources in support of significant teaching activities
  • Contribute to the development of the Department's (and the University) learning and teaching strategy
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement and public engagement activities with the sustained high-value impact of manifest benefit to the College and the University in a teaching/education context
  • Develop and implement a culture (including policies and procedures) that promotes Equality and values diversity and inclusion
  • Leading, serve-on and assist the work of committees and task and finish groups beyond School/Department, e.g., Senate, Council, University Education or Research Committee
  • Lead external committees, e.g., those associated with public/professional bodies or delivery of activities for an external body at an appropriate level, e.g., chairing subcommittees associated with significant elements of work
  • Make a sustained contribution to widening participation, schools outreach and public understanding of the discipline
  • Contribute to administrative activities within the University (e.g., appeals panels, working groups)
  • You will have:

  • Typically, a higher Degree (usually PhD) relevant to civil engineering or a closely related discipline or equivalent experience or qualifications
  • Demonstrated excellence in Learning and Teaching, management, and administration
  • Teaching

    An excellent teaching profile and performance in terms of both impact and quality. Teaching quality demonstrated to be informed by an appropriate level of scholarship.
