I. JOB OVERVIEW
Job Description Summary:
The George Washington University is seeking an Associate General Counsel to join the team of lawyers in its Office of the Vice President and General Counsel (OGC), which provides quality legal services, including strategic and legal policy advice on a wide range of issues that confront a large urban private research university. OGC seeks an attorney with broad research compliance and general transactional and contracting expertise, with responsibilities including but not limited to advising on the following areas:
Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning tasks logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a law degree (JD) from an accredited institution; admission in good standing to the District of Columbia Bar or eligibility for admission and 5 years' experience as a practicing attorney.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
The successful candidate will be a member of District of Columbia Bar or eligible for Admission within six (6) months.
Preferred Qualifications:
The successful candidate is an independent self-starter with the expertise and ambition to be part of the Office of the General Counsel to provide legal support for The George Washington University (“GW”). This position would provide legal advice to the university's research enterprise as well as advise on transactional matters, including drafting and reviewing contracts. The successful candidate will also contribute to the GW Office of General Counsel's team environment, demonstrating a willingness to handle a wide variety of legal issues and learn new and developing areas of law that impact university business. Candidates should have at least five (5) years of relevant legal experience, preferably in-house at an academic institution, or a mix of in-house, law firm, government agency, or corporation, with a focus on research and regulatory compliance and drafting research-related agreements. The successful candidate will also have a strong academic record, excellent analytical and communication skills, be proficient in computer and internet applications and programs, and have the ability to retain perspective and a sense of humor.
