Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Associate Director of Finance and Personnel is a key senior staff position in the English department and is responsible for directing the daily and long- term strategic management of the department's fiscal and human resources. This includes general accounting, cost accounting, budget formulation, and personnel management. The director performs extensive financial, scenario, and accounting analyses and forecasting, and applies extensive knowledge of state and university policies to complex personnel and fiscal arrangements. The associate director works extensively with internal and external audiences, including granting agencies and other budgetary and human resource offices at the University of Maryland and other institutions. This position also assists the Director of Operations with oversight of department administrative operations and acts on behalf of the Director during his/her absence.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience:

  • At least seven years of related high-level experience, preferably within an institution of higher education, are required.
  • 2-4 years of direct supervisor experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Exceptional customer service and communication skills and the ability to work with diverse populations, including faculty, staff, students, university officials, and other government and private agencies.
  • Expert knowledge of accounting and business management theories, principles, and practices, including budgeting, auditing, and financial analyses.
  • Outstanding computer software skills and the ability to train employees in these skills.
  • Ability to handle many complex tasks simultaneously, meet deadlines, solve problems, and make informed and often independent decisions, while tracking the steady flow and large volume of ongoing work.
  • Ability to function in a high-traffic office.
  • Preferences:

    Preferences:

  • An advanced degree and 7-10 years of related supervisory-level experience.
  • Working experience in higher education, specifically at UMD, is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with sponsored research administration policies and procedures, including completion of the University of Maryland Research Administration Certificate Program or an equivalent process at another organization.
  • Working knowledge of university software tools and/or systems such as KFS, BPM, PHR, SAS, Concur, Shell Shop, Workday, etc.
  • Knowledge of UMD's procurement, travel, and human resources policies and procedures.

    The starting salary for this position is $100,000-$120,000, depending upon experience and qualifications.

    Job Risks Not Applicable to This Position Physical Demands

    This position is generally sedentary in nature. The incumbent will work in a normal office environment using standard office equipment. Extensive use of a keyboard and good visual acuity is necessary to perform repetitive tasks such as preparing and analyzing data and numbers and viewing computer terminals.
