Reporting to the Director of Career Communities, the Associate Director for Sciences and Healthcare assists students as they navigate pre-medical and pre- health requirements, select a major, and pursue experiences relevant to their career goals. The position also oversees Sciences and Healthcare career communities, supporting student exploration within the health and science professions, and receiving comprehensive support and guidance for graduate/medical school admission. The Associate Director must also be an inclusive, positive, team player who takes a holistic approach to student success, encouraging students to be reflective in their learning and to demonstrate social responsibility and a commitment to service.
Duties and Responsibilities • Provides leadership for the pre-health professions advising for approximately 2,000 pre-health students and alumni pursuing careers (including but not limited to medicine, dentistry, PA, PT, OT, optometry, pharmacy, veterinary, public health, podiatry, speech language pathology, anesthesiology assistant, etc.) • Supervises the Sciences and Health Career Community that includes healthcare administration, sustainability, natural science research, and clinical health professions. • Lead the design and execution of programming to build awareness of science health professions fields for all students. • Advise students on all aspects of the pre-med/pre-health track, including course selection, pre-health requirements, and gaining relevant and meaningful experiences in clinical settings, community service, and research. • Serve as an advisor for pre-health clubs and student organizations on campus.
• In partnership with other members of the team, serves as a liaison to key academic departments and schools, and cultivates relationships with admissions deans/directors at health profession schools. • Gathers and analyzes relevant data on pre-health graduate admission rates • Oversees development of Pre-Health Professions aspects of the Career Services website, e-mail list serve, and social media marketing with support from the Career Services communications staff.
• Key contact for major events and initiatives related to pre-health professions program. • Represents Pre-Health Professions Program at admissions and orientation events throughout the year, including occasional evenings and weekends. • Attends activities/committees on campus, regionally, and nationally. • Keeps informed of new developments nationally in admissions for pre-health programs. • Assist in collaborative efforts with the Office of Student Success to build community for pre-health students that includes academic support, mentoring and career exploration. • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and/or Work Experience
Bachelor's degree in related field and at least four -seven years of related experience in career placement.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications • Master's degree in related field and at least three to five years of related experience in career advising, pre-health advising, or a pre-health field. • Must be able to relate well to a diverse student body, understand the needs of students from underrepresented backgrounds, and be committed to advancing diversity in medical and pre-health education • Ability to interact in a professional manner with students, faculty, prospective applicants, medical school admissions deans • Team player, inclusive, positive outlook • Ability to take initiative and create new programming
Preferred Qualifications • Focused attention in Medicine, Arts & Sciences, Higher Education, or responsibilities closely related to the medical health profession is preferred. • Four to seven years of experience working in a college or university advisory role. • Familiar with topics in pre-health advising, such as AAMC Core Competencies, holistic review, MCAT preparation, mock interviews, etc. • Strong writing and editing skills.
