The Mississippi Urban Research Center at Jackson State University is accepting applications for it Associate Director of Research position.

Minimum Required Education

Ph.D. required in the fields of public policy, public administration, political science, urban and regional planning, urban studies, economics, social work, sociology, criminal justice, statistics, psychology, or related social science areas.

Minimum Required Experience

  • Minimum 5 years' experience working in a research, planning, and/or data gathering & analysis type organization(s).
  • Minimum 5 years' experience developing and designing research studies.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience conducting quantitative, qualitative, mixed- methods research.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience working with quantitative and qualitative statistical analysis software (e.g., SPSS, Nvivo, SAS, GIS).

  • Minimum 5 years' experience creating, managing, and/or analyzing large data sets.

  • Minimum 5 years' experience researching urban-related issues (e.g., education, housing, employment, health, public finance, family structure & interactions, mental health, crime, infrastructure, neighborhood development & revitalization).
  • Minimum 5 years' experience publishing research work in peer- and non-peer reviewed publications.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience presenting research findings to public, private, and non-profit officials and organizations.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience supervising and/or managing research teams, projects, and/or collaborations.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience preparing, administering, and analyzing research surveys and questionnaires.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Analysis of data using statistical software.
  • Ability to conduct quantitative and qualitative research.
  • Ability to work at a computer station for extended periods of time.
  • Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a MURC-led research agenda that seeks to identify recommendations, solutions, interventions, and/or best practices to urban- oriented problems.

  • Write research reports, policy/position papers, evaluation reports, and grant applications addressing urban problems.

  • Collect and analyze both primary and secondary data for root causes of urban problems.

  • Form research collaborations with JSU academic and non-academic units for the purpose of investigating and developing solutions to urban-oriented problems.

  • Supervise and/or manage internal and external MURC-led research teams, projects, and/or collaborations.

  • Form partnerships with community-based and other non-profit organizations working on urban-related issues and solutions.

  • Monitor and track national, regional, statewide, and local socio-economic issues impacting urban areas.

  • Conduct focus groups, key informant meetings, and community meetings.

  • Plan and conduct workshops, symposiums, forums, seminars, and/or conferences.

  • Perform other duties as required.
