Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University seeks an
experienced academic leader with a strong commitment to advancing medical
education including teaching; faculty recruitment and development including
advancement, promotion and/or tenure; and leadership development which
contributes to the strategic priorities of the College of Medicine. The
Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs will interact directly with Department
Chairs, Program Directors, and Course/Clerkship Directors and collaborate
closely with the Offices of Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Admissions, and
clinical practices. The Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs will provide
leadership of programs that support faculty in all tracks and across all
career stages, including the development of educational initiatives, courses,
programs, workshops, and seminars to develop faculty as academicians and
leaders; consult with individual faculty to mentor through promotion and/or
tenure; and assist with scholarship. The Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs
will assist with faculty recruitment and retention and coordinate the annual
faculty evaluation process.
Job Summary – Responsible to the Vice Dean of Academic Affairs for promoting
excellence in faculty teaching; promoting leadership development for
interested faculty; orienting and mentoring new faculty; guiding faculty
through the successful navigation of the promotion and tenure process;
supporting faculty recruitment and retention efforts; overseeing professional
development programs; and, supporting and growing scholarship and research
among faculty. The Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs will maintain faculty
rank and appointment in their existing academic department and will devote 20%
of their time in this role in a teaching capacity.
Responsibilities include but not limited to -
Provide guidance to the Dean and Vice Dean on matters of Faculty Affairs.
Support and encourage faculty excellence in the academic areas of teaching, service, and scholarship/research
Display a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Develop and coordinate programs to improve skills in educational strategies and leadership for all faculty and professional staff and which contribute to faculty and staff success and wellness.
Oversee faculty orientation and career transitions for faculty
Develop and support effective strategies for faculty recruitment and retention.
Identify and enhance opportunities for scholarship and research collaborations within the College of Medicine, ETSU, the VA to promote faculty scholarship and academic progression
Engage faculty to identify professional development activities to meet knowledge gaps, enhance teaching endeavors, and ensure high-quality graduate and medical education
Enhance the annual evaluation process to provide meaningful feedback and goal-setting for academic success and medical education excellence
Maintain abreast of academic and accreditation standards for resident and medical students to create programs of excellence
Support/mentor chairs in their roles as leaders in teaching, research, and service and in evaluating and developing their faculty; oversee and coordinate the annual faculty evaluation process and collaborate with the Dean in annually evaluating the chairs.
Assist faculty and Department Chairs in the compilation of teaching portfolios and dossiers for advancement, promotion and/or tenure decisions, and in implementing targeted and focused development plans to teaching skills
Develop appropriate mechanisms for recognizing teaching, research/scholarship and service accomplishments of the faculty and identify faculty for training and leadership opportunities.
Support Continuing Education courses and the faculty's role in providing quality continuing education.
Teach in area of expertise as needed and perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated leadership experience in an academic setting or similar environment
Strong commitment to working with COM leadership in establishing excellence in educational programs
Knowledge of faculty affairs, graduate medical education and accreditation standards, and medical student academic programs
Experience in faculty and staff professional development including evaluation and feedback
Ability to communicate effectively with excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
Broad experience and knowledge of health sciences education and teaching pedagogies.
Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research design and analysis to support institutional effectiveness and faculty research and scholarship
Familiarity with LCME and ACGME accreditation standards and processes.
Current full-time ETSU Employee.
Terminal doctoral degree (MD/DO, EdD, PhD).
At least 5 years' full-time experience in academic education.
