The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) College of Dentistry invites
applications for a full time Associate or Professor rank to serve as Associate
Dean for Research in the College of Dentistry and Department Head for the
Department of Oral Biology.
The Associate Dean for Research provides support to the Dean in the
administration of the College's research programs. This support includes
directing the College's Office of Research Services and interfacing with
College and the Vice Chancellor for Research and the Offices of Technology
Management, Protection of Research Subjects, Research Services and other
University System level units. The successful candidate will provide vision
and leadership in the administration of the College's research programs and
will foster collaborative research activities that will create robust
interdisciplinary research partnerships. As Department Head, the successful
candidate will provide visionary and strategic leadership, management, and
administrative support of the Department of Oral Biology's
postgraduate/graduate education and research programs and continue to expand
its reputation as a national and internationally recognized center of
education, research, and service. In addition to administrative roles, this
position may include didactic and clinical teaching responsibilities.

strengths in the College include wound healing, tissue engineering,
inflammation/immunology, cancer biology, microbiology, caries and functional
foods, global health, artificial intelligence, precision medicine, and oral
health disparities. The College is located in one of the most comprehensive
academic health sciences centers in the U.S. that includes a Comprehensive
Cancer Center, Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences, College of
Medicine, College of Applied Health Sciences, School of Public Health, College
of Engineering, College of Nursing and College of Pharmacy.
Associate Dean Responsibilities:
Direct the College of Dentistry Office of Research Services, provide
support for grants writing/administration, and foster collaborative
research activities amongst College faculty and their colleagues in the
Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Social Work, Applied Health
Sciences and Public Health and other UIC Campus Colleges.
Develop and direct student research and student recruitment programs and
facilitate student/faculty mentoring pairing.
Facilitate faculty in research mentoring, career development, and the seed
research funding program.
Facilitate the expansion of innovative oral health research and research
training across the College.
Facilitate the attainment of extramural research funding.
Seek and advocate for resource allocation to and manage the resources of
the Office of Research.
Collaborate in and initiate the recruitment of research-intensive faculty.
Generate and maintain outcome data on overall faculty research
Supervise the College Clinical Research Center.
Facilitate research accomplishment within the college.
University and Campus:
Act as liaison to and facilitator for inter-institutional and inter-
disciplinary research and research training initiatives.
Interface with the campus Office of Vice Chancellor for Research and other
University System level units
Develop and create visibility for college-aligned research and research
training across constituents.
Broker partnerships with community leaders and agencies for synergistic

Department Head Responsibilities:
Provides overall direction to the work of the department.
Organizes and evaluates the nature and scope of the work of the faculty.
Calls and presides over meetings of the faculty.
Formulates and executes departmental policies and executes college and
university policies as they affect the department.
Prepares and administers departmental budget.
Recommends departmental appointments and promotions.
Oversees admission and progress of the students in the department.
Serves as the agent of the department faculty and the official person for
communications between the department and other units within the
university and other agencies and institutions.
Enhances and promotes funded research.
Insure appropriate mentorship of faculty in the department.
Serves on College and campus committees as required.
Other duties as assigned.
Candidate must have a DDS/DMD, MD/DO, or PhD (or equivalent degree), have a
history of sustained and ongoing extramural funded research, and must have
academic/scientific experience in research mentoring. The preferred candidate
will have demonstrated experience of mentoring junior faculty, graduate and/or
professional students, exemplary interpersonal skills and a documented record
of fostering collaborative research between a dental school and outside
entities. In addition, the preferred candidate would have knowledge of finance
and budget management, human resource or management experience and securing
external or internal research/grant funding. Candidates with a desire to
participate in a program of excellence, and demonstrable experience in
promoting an equitable, inclusive, humanistic and diverse scholarly

Academic rank, tenure track, and salary will be commensurate with
