Title Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs

Appointment Status Tenure Track Department IUPUI Dentistry-Administration Position Summary

Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD) invites nominations and applications for the position of Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, with the appointment to begin January 1, 2022 or as soon as it is filled. This is a full-time 1.0, 12-month appointment requiring associate or full professor rank with tenure. Experience in a dental school setting is preferred.

The successful candidate for this position will be a member of the Dean's cabinet and serve as a visionary leader who can create and implement a robust faculty development program. The candidate will play a pivotal role in building our institutional capacity to advance IUSD's new Strategic Plan through a focus on the pedagogical, clinical, research, and leadership skills and needs of our faculty throughout all stages of their academic career. Critical to the future success of the office is the breaking down of traditional boundaries to create a school-wide culture of life-long learning.


  • Represent executive-level administration in the development and delivery of faculty-related programs and activities
  • Fulfill administrative responsibilities that assure the financial stability of the institution as well as effective space and resource usage
  • Work with the other associate/assistant deans as well as department chairs to facilitate faculty recruitment, retention, development, advancement, and succession planning
  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Diversity and Student Affairs and the Associate Dean for Academic Programs to build a broader culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Develop, provide, and oversee mentoring programs for faculty and department chairs at various stages of their career
  • Create and maintain a humanistic environment among faculty, staff, and students to enhance learning
  • Work as needed with department chairs, the dean, and the Office of Equal Opportunity on cases of faculty professional misconduct
  • Guide and optimize the work of the Faculty Affairs team to support the office's mission, including supporting growth, creativity, and advancement among its team members
  • IUSD offers a dynamic learning environment for faculty, in which teaching, research, clinical care, and community service are core to our mission, through clinical programs in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Evansville, Indiana. Our main facility includes a state-of-the-art 45,000–square-foot James J. Fritts DDS Clinical Care Center on the IUPUI campus, adjacent to local hospitals and part of an urban academic health center. We deliver a wide range of services and outreach to more than 20,000 patients per year. IUSD enrolls approximately 800 students annually in degree and/or certificate programs in dentistry, allied dental programs, PhD, and advanced dental specialty programs tailored to current and future needs of the professions and the communities we serve. . The IU School of Dentistry is the only dental school in the state and educates 80% of the dentists practicing in Indiana. Over 12,000 alumni of IUSD are pursuing careers throughout the US and around the world

    Basic Qualifications


  • DDS, DMD, or PhD (DDS/DMD must be from a CODA-accredited institution or equivalent)
  • Administrative experience in Faculty Affairs
  • Strategic planning experience
  • Proven ability to mentor department chairs and faculty of diverse backgrounds and experience levels
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal relations skills
  • Background in promotion and tenure and performance review processes
  • Proven commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

    Additional Qualifications


  • Advanced degree in education or a similar discipline
  • Full professor rank with tenure
  • Mediation or conflict resolution experience, particularly experience as an ombudsperson or a similar role
  • Experience managing a unit/department through an accreditation cycle
  • Previous experience as an assistant dean or higher
  • Salary and Rank Salary, rank and tenure status will be commensurate with experience. Special Instructions
