The Associate Dean, Faculty of Applied and Technical Studies (ATS) will
provide leadership and direction in the attainment of UFV's Vision, Mission,
Integrated Strategic Plan, and Strategic Enrolment Management Plan in engaging
learners, transforming lives and building community. As a member of the Deans
Council and the Provost's Cabinet, the Associate Dean will contribute to UFV's
senior administration team.
The Associate Dean will provide a leadership role in cultivating and
supporting faculty development and success and ensuring ATS is engaged with
our goals of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and Indigenization. The
Associate Dean contributes within the following key areas: faculty development
and mentorship; program planning, development, and renewal; student affairs;
and partnerships. The Associate Dean builds on UFV's commitment to
interdisciplinary and cross-faculty collaboration and to connecting the
University with the community, learning with doing, and scholarly activity
The Associate Dean:
Works closely with the Dean and ATS leadership team to plan, develop and
facilitate the Faculty of Applied and Technical Studies in the attainment
of UFV's Integrated Strategic Plan and Strategic Enrolment Management
Manages and supports faculty development and success and ensures ATS is
engaged with our goals of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and
Indigenization including the implementation of Lálém ye mestíyexw (“House
of the Peoples”) plan.
Provides day-to-day leadership and direction to staff and faculty and
supports the Dean with selection and hiring, tenure and promotion
processes, performance evaluation and performance management, and labour
Administers review of faculty expertise and performance with respect to
teaching, scholarly activity, and service.
Supports and reviews faculty members' annual plans, faculty scholarship
and sabbatical applications and reports.
Encourages and supports faculty in developing their academic and
professional leadership abilities, including initiating professional
development opportunities for faculty to ensure high quality teaching
practices are consistently deployed across the Faculty.
Supports the development and cultivation of local and regional
partnerships, including with school districts, industry and community
partners, and Indigenous communities and organizations.
Assists the Dean with industry liaisons and the development of new
programs to match industry requirements and ongoing redevelopment of
Works in collaboration with the Dean and UFV International to facilitate
international partnerships, including exchange opportunities for faculty,
staff, and students.
Works together with the ATS Faculty Council and committees to further the
response and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's
(TRC) Calls to Action on Education and adheres to the principles of the
United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
Liaises with UFV Indigenous Affairs and community partners to develop and
facilitate learning opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to
foster a greater understanding of cultural diversity and Indigenization.
Works closely with the Dean to address student issues.
Creates the conditions for people with Indigenous and diverse backgrounds
to succeed at UFV.
Includes equity deserving groups in opportunities and decision-making.
Builds inclusive and diverse teams who have different perspectives,
abilities, experiences, races, backgrounds, identities, and/or styles.
Invites and responds to different perspectives from a place of curiosity,
respect, and non-judgement.
Demonstrates respect for all members of the UFV community and proactively
works to create an environment of inclusivity and accessibility.
Engages in learning and activities related to actioning indigenization and
understanding the impact of colonialism and the purpose of reconciliation.
A Master's degree or where applicable, a BC Certificate of Qualification,
Interprovincial Red Seal, certified Journeyperson or a terminal degree or
professional qualification and extensive on-the-job experience, defined by
the discipline or professional area.
A minimum of nine years of relevant experience including 3 years of
successful administration experience.
Distinguished achievement in the discipline and/or scholarship on teaching
Experience working with diverse groups.
Substantial leadership contributions in service.
A high level of personal and professional integrity, a strong sense of
ethics, and respect for privacy and confidentiality.
An ability to establish priorities and achieve objectives.
Experience in effective conflict management.
An ability to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.
Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the
ability to lead group discussions.
Demonstrated experience in assessment and evaluation.
Analytical reasoning skills for analysis of data and information for the
purposes of making sound decisions.
Knowledge of, and experience with, academic governance.
Experience in developing/facilitating professional development.
Knowledge of indigenous ways of knowing and being as reflected in one's
Thorough understanding of internationalization in post-secondary
Experience with labour relations and, preferably, knowledge of the UFV
