Title Assistant Vice Chancellor for Faculty Affairs

The assistant vice chancellor for faculty affairs (AVC for Faculty Affairs) at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI; or IU-I after July 1, 2024) is a key member of the executive leadership team in the Office of Academic Affairs, reporting to the senior associate vice chancellor for academic affairs (SAVCAA), but with deep collaborative ties with the associate vice chancellor for faculty diversity and inclusion, IU and IUPUI Human Resources, the Office of Institutional Equity (or OIE), and others. Working with the SAVCAA, the primary goal is faculty career success. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Promotion and tenure: design and deliver professional development related to faculty career advancement, for candidates, mentors, and administrators. Manage, with staff and SAVCAA, the campus-level P&T cycle. Manage, with faculty governance, revision of guidelines and processes. Advise schools, departments, and faculty on P&T criteria and processes.

  • Manage all faculty affairs website documentation and contents for faculty and administrator use.
  • Policy management and leadership: represent and advance IUPUI faculty needs in campus, faculty governance, and university offices affected by or in control of policies that affect faculty. Propose policy changes to enhance faculty success; design new procedures to reflect policy changes; implement new procedures to reflect administrative needs.

  • Communicate with associate deans for faculty affairs, chairs, and HR staff regarding faculty lifecycle and development issues
  • Advise SAVCAA on faculty management issues; act as policy resource.
  • Work with OAA and central IT and HR staff to carry out aspects of the following processes:
  • Full-time faculty searches, interviews, offers, transfers
  • Reappointments and non-reappointments.
  • Faculty leaves (parental, medical, etc.)
  • Other items: titled professorships, emeritus status, retirement processes, administrator titles; overloads; retention tracking.
  • Communicate with staff in schools, at IUPUI HR, and IU HR, UIRR, and other offices, to carry out these functions consistently.
  • This position will serve as a primary resource for the campus on policies and procedures related to faculty hiring, retention, and advancement—primarily for full-time faculty (AC1) but also for some aspects of adjunct and graduate student appointees (AC2, AC3.). This position will partner with the associate vice chancellor for faculty diversity and inclusion to support recruitment and retention efforts and coordinate with the School of Medicine Faculty Affairs and Professional Development office.

    Basic Qualifications

    The successful candidate for this key academic leadership role must have the following qualifications:

  • Academic rank as a tenured associate professor (minimum) although full rank is preferred
  • Current full-time employee within the IU system
  • Familiarity with faculty policies and procedures; ability both to consider details and think strategically
  • Commitment to faculty and campus diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Flexibility to adapt to changes in a dynamic campus and university environment, including openness to innovation and change
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative working groups to identify and pursue projects and implement policies
  • Evidence of leadership experience
  • The following are preferred characteristics:

  • Experience with faculty affairs (administrative experience)
  • Service in and leadership within faculty governance
  • Experience in promotion and tenure processes and effective mentoring
  • Knowledge of national trends around faculty recruitment, retention, and success

    Additional Qualifications Salary and Rank Special Instructions

    The search will be conducted during fall semester 2023, with a start date at 50% effort on January 1, 2024.

    After May 31, 2024, the position will adjust to a higher percentage of effort to be determined in consultation between the candidate and the SAVCAA (between 75% and 100%).
