Position Details

General Statement

University Studies is part of MSU's Advising Commons and serves as the academic home to exploring and undecided students. University Studies serves over 7000 students each year by providing academic advising to undecided and exploring students as well offering supplemental advising to students within declared majors. University Studies also offers two US core courses, US 101US and COMX 111US, which are taken by over 1300 students each year.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist Seminar Director with all facets of US 101 First-Year Seminar including, curriculum development and assessment; hiring and managing NTT and peer mentors; facilitating weekly instructor meetings and US 460 Peer Leadership; representing University Seminars on campus committees; collaborating with a wide campus constituency on first-year student programming.
  • Teach minimum of one section of US 101US each academic year.
  • Provide academic advising and participate in advising activities for University Studies and Advising Commons.
  • Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Master's degree in relevant area.
  • College level teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with and engaging diverse students and colleagues.
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Teaching experience in a first-year seminar.
  • Curriculum development and assessment experience.
  • Experience in academic advising, particularly advising undeclared students.
  • Familiarity with MSU policies, procedures, resources, and curriculum.
  • Experience collaborating with multiple academic and student success departments.

  • Foster excellent working relationships with and mentor course instructors, peer mentors, and students.
  • Forge strong, positive, interactions with departmental and other campus colleagues to enhance the mission of first-year seminars, programming, and academic advising at MSU.
