Improving the identification of mental health difficulties in children and adults with neurodevelopmental disorders

Applications are invited for a researcher to work across two innovative research projects, designed to understand and improve the identification of emotional distress in children and adults with neurodevelopmental disorders associated with intellectual disabilities, and their families. This is a part- time (.8 fte) fixed term post until 30th September 2022. The successful applicant will join the Aston Institute for Health and Neurodevelopment (https: // www2.aston.ac.uk/lhs/research/groups/aston-institute-of-health-and- neurodevelopment), and the Cerebra Network for Neurodevelopmental Disorders (https: // www. cerebranetwork.com/).

The post is supported by funding from our charitable partner, the Baily Thomas Foundation and Autistica. These charities work towards improved healthcare outcomes and quality of life for children with autism, intellectual disabilities and rare genetic syndromes. The aims of the projects are to:

  • Assess mental health and well-being in children and adults with neurodevelopmental disorders associated with intellectual disability
  • Assess factors impacting parents' well-being and behaviour
  • Support the development and validation of new assessment tools for use with children and adults with neurodevelopmental disorders and their families.
  • Collect preliminary data of the utility of these tools within NHS healthcare settings.
  • This post would suit a range of candidates. For example, this post would be a good fit for someone with previous experience of working as an assistant psychologist, who wants to obtain an in-depth understanding of clinically relevant research prior to applying to the Clinical Psychology Doctorate. The post would also suit a researcher (post graduate or post doctorate) with a background in intellectual disability or neurodevelopmental conditions. In both instances, we would support the post holder to gain experience relevant to their future career trajectory and would provide training and encourage development opportunities to enhance the post holder's likelihood of future success. The post holder will join a busy and dynamic research team and will also contribute to other research projects when they have capacity within their working hours.

The post could involve frequent driving to conduct assessments with families within the UK, with some overnight stays (this is COVID-19 restriction dependent and will be subject to a risk assessment). Time spent travelling to and from participant's homes would be included within working hours and mileage costs would be covered. Due to changes in working due to the pandemic, some assessment sessions are likely to be delivered remotely via web call.

Offer of this post will depend on successful completion of Enhanced DBS check.
