The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Technical University of Darmstadt has a vacancy to start no later than the winter semester 2023/24 for an

Assistant Professorship W2 with Tenure Track for Structural Engineering

initially for a period of 6 years.

We are looking for an up-and-coming scientific talent with an excellent academic profile, documented by an outstanding relevant doctorate and publications in specialist journals. Particularly desired are candidates with follow-up potential, evidenced e.g. by joint publications with (international) colleagues or successful collaborative projects, and with experience in obtaining third-party funding as well as links to practice. German language skills are necessary, but may be obtained within the first years.

The professorship should represent the field of structural engineering in research and teaching in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Candidates are qualified in one or more of the following topics in the context of structural analysis, especially with regard to the existing infrastructure in the Glass Competence Center (GCC):

  • Cross-material structural design
  • Structural glass design
  • Modelling and optimisation using numerical and experimental methods
  • Use of new materials or combinations of materials in structural engineering
  • The research of the professorship should take on an interface function in order to further advance inter-disciplinary topics in materials research and to consolidate them in the department or to open up new research areas for the entire TU.

An excellent scientific CV is expected, ideally with links to construction practice, which clearly shows the applicant's development potential. Commitment to teaching in the Bachelor's and Master's programmes in civil and environmental engineering is valued. A willingness to participate in academic self-administration is required. A written teaching and research concept must be submitted; this should also address cooperation intentions in the department and at the university.

The assistant professorship is designated as a qualification professorship according to §70 HessHG (Hessian Higher Education Act). Accordingly, the duration of the academic activity during and after the doctorate should generally not exceed nine years or the scientific activity after the doctorate four years. Furthermore, applicants should have completed their doctorate at a university other than TU Darmstadt or have worked scientifically outside TU Darmstadt for at least two years after completing their doctorate.

The position is initially limited to six years. The position comes with the option of a tenured professorship after a successfully completed tenure process. The tenure process, which can be initiated one and a half years before the end of the assistant professorship, evaluates the corresponding achievements in research and teaching. After a successful probationary phase, the immediate transition to a tenured professorship is granted. For further information, please see the tenure guidelines of Technische Universität Darmstadt. Remuneration follows the German W-Besoldung at level W2 Hessisches Besoldungsgesetz. A comparable employment relationship is possible.

Technische Universität Darmstadt intends to increase the number of female faculty members and encourages female candidates to apply. In case of equal qualifications applicants with a degree of disability of at least 50 or equal will be given preference. Technische Universität Darmstadt is certified as a family-friendly university and offers a dual career program.

Applications should be sent to the Dean of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Technische Universität Darmstadt, Postfach 10 06 36, 64206 Darmstadt, preferably in electronic form (PDF file) to: [email protected] Applications should be accompanied by the usual documents, in particular a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, an overview of previous teaching activities (if applicable, teaching vitae), a description of scientific activities, a teaching and research concept and copies of the relevant certificates and diplomas.

If you have any queries regarding the content, please contact: Prof.-Dr.-Ing. Hauke Zachert ([email protected])
