Given this context, faculty within the Department of Psychological Sciences invite applications for a nine-month tenure-track Assistant Professor of Psychology in the College of Arts, Sciences, Business and Education with a start date of August 2023. Job responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses, serving as a faculty advisor, mentoring students inside and outside the classroom; producing scholarly research that results in publications in peer-reviewed journals within the discipline area or within peer-reviewed journals that promote the teaching and learning of the discipline; facilitating presentations at well-respected professional conferences; engaging in the procurement of extramural funds with interdisciplinary teams; participating in departmental, College, and university service as well as engaging in service to one's professional discipline and the larger Winston- Salem and Forsyth County communities.

Faculty in the Department of Psychological Sciences seek exceptional candidates who demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching the foundations of psychology to undergraduate students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and who illustrate an ability to leverage various technologies that engage students in the learning process. We desire candidates who meet the following requirements:

  • Must have a doctoral degree in psychology from a regionally accredited four-year institution of higher education.
  • Demonstrate experience teaching research methodology and statistics.
  • Illustrate evidence of mentoring undergraduate students in research experiences or experience engaging students in study abroad, internship opportunities, or service-learning activities where they must leverage their content knowledge to benefit the larger community.
  • Demonstrate the ability to participate in interdisciplinary teaching and research collaborations with professional colleagues at the university, across universities, or within the broader public.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to liberal education and equity in a diverse educational community, and they must illustrate a commitment to their professional growth and development via engagement in professional organizations and professional conferences.
  • Demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to enhance the department's curricular and co-curricular programs.
  • Demonstrate experience working in interdisciplinary teams to procure extramural funding.
  • Possess effective written and verbal communication skills.

    Describe the specific job duties related to this competency

    The successful candidate will perform a variety of duties consistent with the expectations of a tenure-track Assistant Professor at the university including the following:

    Teaching and Advising

  • Teach undergraduate courses in psychology (e.g., research methods and statistics, cross-cultural psychology, health psychology, etc.) in a variety of modalities (i.e., face-to-face, online, and hybrid)
  • Develop detailed course syllabi that articulate course expectations, learning outcomes, assignment course calendar, and course evaluation standards.
  • Evaluate student performance by providing timely communication to students regarding their academic progress to promote student success.
  • Mentor students on research and community projects.
  • Hold regular office hours each week.
  • Provide effective academic advising.
  • Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity

  • Produce scholarly research that results in publications in peer-reviewed journals within the discipline area or within peer-reviewed journals that promote the teaching and learning of the discipline.
  • Facilitate presentations at well-respected international, national, regional, state and local professional conferences and meetings within the academic discipline.
  • Collaborate with faculty within the department and across campus to procure extramural funds.

  • Attend consistently departmental and college meetings.
  • Serve on departmental-level committees.
  • Serve on college- and university-level committees.
  • Maintain membership in discipline-specific professional organizations.
  • Assist discipline-specific professional organizations with reviews of conference proposals, peer-reviewed journal articles, and other professional engagement opportunities.
