To achieve its vision, the Department of Biological Sciences has set as its mission several inter-related goals: • To advance the frontiers of knowledge through innovation and research in the biological sciences; • To facilitate the development of scientists in the guidance of our bachelor, master's, and doctoral Biology students, and in the training of post-doctoral fellows. • To increase scientific literacy, foster an appreciation of scientific inquiry, and develop well-informed citizens by providing general education in Biology to the student population; • To participate in the University-wide academic community through interdisciplinary collaborations, programs, and curricula; • To contribute to local, national, and international scientific communities through collaborations and service activities that promote education and dissemination of information; • To contribute to the community by collaborating with public, nonprofit, private, and industry partners in the Charlotte metropolitan area and the State of North Carolina. Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals. Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work. Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member's discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work. Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Required qualifications for this position include: a Ph.D. in the biological sciences or related fields with expertise in working at the interface of biology and the environment including studying interactions between any organismal systems, taxonomic groups or biological systems and the environment; proficiency in the discipline by a record of postdoctoral training and peer-reviewed publications; potential to secure extramural funding; as well as commitment to teach and mentor a diverse student population at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Special consideration will be given to applicants who use state-of-the-art genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and/or metabolomic approaches.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop and sustain an independent, externally funded, research program including students. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the teaching mission of Biological Sciences through the instruction of undergraduate and graduate courses.

Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Desired qualifications include previous teaching and mentoring experience, evidence that the candidate has promoted diversity through outreach to the community, and a commitment to working with diverse students, faculty, and staff.
