The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), is Doctoral/Research extensive and a premier public urban university committed to academic excellence, located in the commercial and industrial hub of Wisconsin. UW-Milwaukee is one of the two “doctoral cluster” campuses in the 26-campus University of Wisconsin System with a student enrollment close to 28,000. The Department of Biological Sciences is home to both the Microbiology major and the Biological Sciences major. The department is comprised of approximately 22 faculty members, 10 academic staff, three classified staff, 52 graduate students, 600 undergraduate majors, and 4000 enrolled undergraduate students. The department is housed in Lapham Hall.

Job Summary

The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) invites applications for a tenure-track ASSISTANT PROFESSOR position in microbial genetics/genomics to start in Fall 2022. We seek an outstanding candidate with a strong record of research in microbial genetics and pathogenesis. This position is part of a larger departmental strategic hiring initiative in Host-Pathogen Interactions.

Research may include mechanisms of bacterial virulence, antimicrobial resistance, microbe-host or microbe-virus interactions, effects of the host microbiome on disease, and related areas. Laboratory space accommodating BSL-1 or BSL-2 is available. A Ph.D. degree and at least 2 years postdoctoral experience in microbial genetics or a related area are required. The successful candidate is expected to establish a vigorous, extramurally funded research program, train students (undergraduate, M.S., and Ph.D.) and postdoctoral associates, and contribute to both the Microbiology and Biological Sciences curriculum, including a course in microbial genetics. Minimum Qualifications

PhD in Microbiology or related area

A minimum of two years of postdoctoral experience in microbial genetics or in a related area

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated record of strong research experience

Demonstrated evidence of securing extramural funding

Demonstrated evidence of teaching excellence

Demonstrated evidence of/potential for collaboration

Demonstrated experience in host-microbe interactions

Demonstrated experience in bacterial microbiology
