The National College of Education at NLU seeks nominations and applications for graduate faculty in Early Childhood Education. This is a full-time professional practice Teacher Preparation faculty position (10-month contract) at the Assistant Professor rank (or rank commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position requires substantial early childhood expertise to support program growth and teach engaging, graduate level coursework. In addition to teaching in and shaping innovative programs at the Master's level including a growing teacher preparation residency program, the successful applicant will have opportunity to contribute to doctoral program development. Candidates with both higher education and PK-3 teaching experience, or experience teaching in various specialty/content areas, are highly desired.

Primary Responsibilities

The successful candidate is an accomplished early childhood educator with a passion for developing pre-service teachers to their fullest potential. Each term, teaching responsibilities will include online, blended, or face to face classes that utilize technology and data to drive instruction. With an explicit focus on meeting the needs of diverse students, equity and culturally responsive teaching and learning, faculty and staff work collaboratively to support students and provide exemplary instruction. Experience in contemporary PK-3 classroom settings, and knowledge of the teacher preparation for early childhood educators is required. NCE faculty typically teach in a combination of traditional, residency and alternative programs. With strong growth in its early childhood programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and home to the McCormick Center for Early Childhood Leadership, NCE also seeks faculty who can engage in research and scholarship related to early childhood education. The opportunity for research, and to assist in the development of doctoral coursework in early childhood education, is part of this opportunity.

The successful candidate will, as part of the teacher preparation faculty team:

• Teach and facilitate student learning in assigned graduate courses in online, blended, and face to face modalities in traditional and residency programs

• Work with school-based personnel to mentor candidates and/or teacher residents and work in collaboration with cooperating teachers to support candidate success

• Collaborate with faculty to continuously assess and improve our CAEP- accredited ECE MAT Teacher Preparation program

• Engage in the learning-community life of National Louis University through engagement in meetings, committees, professional development, and collaborative projects with faculty and staff • Fulfill other faculty duties in Research & Scholarship, Service, and Professional Development & Engagement domains

This position will begin as early as the fall 2021 term, and will be based out of the NLU Chicago campus, and will require flexibility to teach/visit all of our campuses, and/or satellite sites depending on need. Supervision in the field is also required.

Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in an education discipline, early childhood development, or related field, and 3-5 years of teaching in PK-2 settings.
  • Demonstrated experience as an early childhood educator, preferably in both higher education and PK-12 settings
  • Demonstrated background in promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in the preparation of teachers to transform classrooms through high leverage teaching practices
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting social justice through an asset-based approach to teaching and learning in the early years, birth to grade 2.
  • Model excellence in teaching and have a strong foundation in promoting early childhood teacher candidate readiness to teach in diverse and inclusive school settings
  • Demonstrated experience and fluency teaching in online, blended and face to face settings using a learning management system.
  • Insight, experience and a background of research into teaching and learning in early childhood education
  • A passion for teaching and supervising practicum and student teachers who are placed in urban and other high-needs educational settings. Experience working with teacher residency programs is desirable.
  • An Illinois or equivalent professional educator's license and specialized endorsements are preferred
