Summary

The Department of Urban Education at the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) invites applications for one or more tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor of Science Education. The candidate will join a department that offers undergraduate and master's degree programs with a focus on preparing and developing educators to provide equitable educational experiences for culturally and linguistically diverse student populations. We seek applicants who are committed to cultivating diverse teacher leaders, who can create transformational and equity-focused change in K-12 schools and other educational contexts through our teacher preparation program, and who bring critical approaches to teaching within school communities including students, families, and teachers. The department is committed to removing inequities that face underserved and marginalized populations and encourage applicants with a similar social justice focus. Academic responsibilities include: teaching and developing undergraduate and/or graduate courses; supporting students as they prepare for and pass certification exams; assisting in the development of undergraduate and graduate programs; providing departmental, college, university, and professional service; and maintaining a research agenda.

The current teaching load for this position is 4/3 with a 3/3 load in the first year on the tenure track. Teaching in multiple modalities, day and evening, at any of UHD's three (3) campuses, and a commitment to excellence in teaching, including the ability to model exemplary methods for working with diverse populations of learners is required. The ideal candidate can proficiently use instructional technology for teaching and learning, and has a willingness to collaborate with university colleagues, as well as school district, and community partners through service activities. The position requires that the candidate establish a successful program of research and engage in research and service activities that support the department, college, university and the profession.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate, by the time of appointment, in STEM/science education, Curriculum and Instruction, or a strongly related field with an academic specialization in science education (at least 18 hours of graduate coursework). Doctoral candidates who are nearing completion are also encouraged to apply (ABD considered).
  • Demonstrated ability and/or interest in teaching in a multiethnic, multilingual, multicultural environment
  • At least three (3) years of full-time experience as a K-12 classroom teacher, preferably in a public school setting
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates possess a master's degree in education, an education-related field and/or in the sciences (physical sciences, life sciences, or earth sciences)
  • Experience with special education/special populations at the K-12 level
  • Experience working with English language learners at the K-12 and/or higher education levels
  • Experience in field-based teacher education programs and higher education teaching experience
  • Proficiency in instructional technology, online instruction, and effective course design in a variety of course modalities
  • Experience in creating/leading professional development activities for teachers
  • Experience in Service Learning and/or Community Engagement with multicultural, multiethnic, multilingual populations
  • Evidence of supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion by addressing educational inequities and the improvement of educational outcomes
  • Evidence of successful or potential for success in teaching, service, and research/scholarly creative involvement, including but not limited to publications and grants​​​​​​​
