Description

Position Details: Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor with dual appointment in the Departments of Biology & Environment, Geography, and Earth Sciences to begin September 1, 2023.

Institution Information: Gustavus Adolphus College seeks employees who are committed to and will be resolute in advancing inclusion and equity. We seek candidates whose experience has prepared them to help us realize our college- wide goal of engagement and inclusion of culturally and racially diverse audiences in the humanities, arts, and sciences. The Gustavus Acts strategic plan renews our commitment to equip students to lead purposeful lives, and to act on the great challenges of our time by diversifying and expanding the Gustavus community and delivering a distinctive and integrated liberal arts education.

To support these goals, Gustavus Adolphus College is currently in the third year of a multiyear, multi-departmental hiring initiative to enhance and diversify departmental curricular and co-curricular offerings. Faculty at Gustavus have opportunities to participate in our interdisciplinary Programs, including African/African Diaspora Studies; Latin American, Latinx, and Caribbean Studies; Peace, Justice, and Conflict Studies; and Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies. Minnesota is home to vibrant and increasingly racially diverse communities, and we believe that representation from these communities positively contributes to our student body. We especially seek faculty members whose impact will be to advance academic and cultural programs in areas relevant to African, Black, or Indigenous history, arts, and culture, while also helping the College engage and support students of color.

We are committed to fostering a community that embodies the value of a liberal arts education rooted in pluralism. We engage in this work at a coeducational, private, Lutheran (ELCA) College of Swedish immigrant heritage that is a leading residential, national liberal arts institution of 2200 students.

Department Information: The Biology and EGE (Environment, Geography and Earth Sciences) Departments offer diverse academic experiences to undergraduate students as part of a strong liberal arts education. The College and both Departments are taking evidence-based actions to enhance diversity and support inclusion in classrooms and among our majors and faculty.

Each year, about 50 Biology and 25 Environmental Studies majors graduate, with interest in the latter growing. Biology majors develop breadth through a required four-course core sequence spanning biochemistry to organismal and systems-level processes. Majors from the Environmental Studies Life Science track take three of the core courses. Both core and elective courses have embedded research opportunities that emphasize quantitative analyses and scientific communication. Our graduates pursue employment, as well as graduate and professional studies in resource management, education, environmental, laboratory or health-related fields.

Departmental faculty are active teacher-scholars who value collaborations within and between disciplines. The College supports this model through newly- renovated science facilities, and resources for field-based teaching and research. Our courses are part of a college-wide liberal arts curriculum that develops a deeper understanding of human cultures and the natural world by inquiry, analysis, and communication while also promoting civic engagement and ethical actions. As such, many of our courses emphasize how science intersects with issues of social, cultural, philosophical, and environmental value. We seek applicants excited about the opportunity to contribute to the College and the Biology and EGE Departments in these ways.

For more information about the departments, our faculty, students, and courses, please see the department websites at https: // gustavus.edu/biology/ and https: // gustavus.edu/ege/.

Major/Essential Functions: Gustavus faculty teach, advise, conduct research, and serve the college and department. Currently, tenure-line Gustavus faculty have a 6-course equivalent teaching assignment. In their first year, the successful candidate will receive a reduced teaching assignment of five courses, plus one fully-compensated course release.

Primary teaching responsibilities will include introductory Organismal Biology (a core course), intermediate level Conservation Biology (serving both Biology and Environmental Studies majors), and electives within Biology and/or EGE that may include aquatic or terrestrial ecology. Additional opportunities exist to contribute to core-level Biology courses and/or courses in an integrated liberal arts curriculum. The Biology core courses are multi- section; lectures and labs are taught by a team of 3-6 faculty with each instructor teaching their own section(s). The Organismal Biology team would benefit from having a non-animal-oriented person on the instruction team. This new faculty member would establish a research program with undergraduate collaborators in organismal, ecology, or conservation biology. The successful candidate will advise both Biology and Environmental Studies majors, and be a member of both the Biology and EGE Departments. The successful candidate will join College and Departmental efforts to develop equitable pedagogies and inclusive cultures.
